Kemalettin, I still get asked to send shows out on Betacam SP plus many are invested in Digital Betacam. So I never really got the "Betacam" joke as it's been in my work 30 years now in one form or another.

epic should hit the streets fast please

probably sometime in 2011 with its NAB premiere of the fully functioned Epic digital camera system.

But don't forget that before and even after RED1 MX will still rule just because of its compact design,

easy of use, worldwide spread, at the end finally solved workflow and its acceptance at the major rental and post houses.

more fun and less accurate? calling vDSLR's as a Betacam is insult imho.Cant see anything like in dvxuser.Go try it write RedOne on dvxuser,dvinfo,cinema5d and others..

The more fun remark was sarcasm. Less accurate is pretty well self explanatory. If the words that get posted are not the ones you wrote...

Come to think of it, employing such a thing and then insisting that folks be accountable for the things they write (real name policy) is pretty ridiculous.

FWIW...

:jacked:

Sanjin, your saying that Epic won't be available for another year?

It's comments like these that make me have to explain things over and over again to non "RED-aware" people.

This doesn't make any sense to me after reading from Jim himself that they estimate Stage 2 to start shipping "July/August". Ted has said this same thing in every video I watched from RED Day @2010 NAB. After all people are making financial decisions based on this information.

Meanwhile, back to Alexa and Mysterium-X...

Robert,

just count:

Epic tattoo stage or program starts in May 2010.

This testing stage needs optimum time about 6 months.

With that timing could ended at Christmas.

After that they need about three months to rump and fix the production of that complex digital camera design.

With that it is already March 2011.

NAB is in April as we know and Epic has eventually an option for shipping to first customers just before NAB event 2011.

Also don't forget that this time Jim is not going to ship "unfinished" or "beta" product as this was happened before with early stage of RED ONE.

Of course that I could be totally wrong ("as usual") with all the timing.

I'm going to have to agree with Sanjin for the most part... I think Epic will start shipping slightly sooner, beginning of 2011, but I it won't be shipping in significant quantities until NAB2011.

Which is fine with me, as long as it works better than the R1.

You might be right.. But then why would Jim and Ted have said that they estimate that Stage 2 will begin shipping July/Aug more than once just days ago? And I recall that Jim posted that production will ramp up fast.

Unless you know something that we don't? I guess I'm saying that I don't understand the logic behind your statement that directly contradicts both Jim and Ted.

Speculation, and educated guesses. Simple as that, the company has a history of pushing back deadlines they originally slate to improve product performance and quality. If they hit a hiccup or something they absolutely cannot have in their Epic line, even in the Tattoo phase, and it will take another 6 months to fix it, that's what's going to happen. They are very open about that policy, and reserve the right to be perfectionists.

Understood.

Probably the two best things about RED, right there.

What Jim and Ted have said is "everything subject to change".

Just again to point that you should always "count on it".

Without any insight to the engineering process happening right now, I think it's anybody's guess really.

In my opinion, hardware production is probably already ramping up for all the cameras involved. What the tattoo program is probably exercising more is the firmware/software to make sure everything runs great. This is the ONLY way I could see them saying they could be shipping so soon.

But, this is nothing more than speculation of course! :)

Roger Deakins (my idol) stated on his board he's gonna test alexa in this summer.
I would use super 16 rather that the Red camera. I would probably use anything rather than the Red camera!
About Alexa
I plan to test the camera in June when I get back from 'True Grit'.

If the Alexa burns in white balance like the D21 does, then even it's RAW isn't RAW.

They claim "images are sharper and cleaner than other cameras that claim 4K+ resolution." and that "Provides super sharp, alias-free images through over sampling" - so I think it's time to see zone plates on those claims, because, quite frankly I don't believe them!

Deakins makes me sad. Love his work, don't love what seems to be a brand bias. As previously discussed in this thread, Roger's forum has a lot of misinformation about Red. Roger himself comes across as profoundly anti-Red for reasons that aren't clear to me. As far as I know, he hasn't laid hands on Epic, but he certainly seems to have cast his lot. Doesn't diminish my respect for his work, but it does make me appreciate the more circumspect approach that some other ASC members (and some top directors) seem to take with regard to emerging tech / emerging companies.

WTF? Anyone who says they are going to test the Alexa camera makes you sad?

Deakins makes beautiful images. He will pick a camera that delivers what he wants out of it, just as he picks film stocks and lenses for what they deliver. He trusts his eyes, and they are a great pair of eyes. It's not the end of the world if he decides to shoot something on the Alexa. I love his work, but that doesn't mean I shoot everything as he does on Arriflexes, Zeiss Master Primes, and Kodak stock with no diffusion filters. I sometimes shoot on Panaflexes, Primo primes, Fuji stock, and diffusion on the lens. So what? His choices don't negate my choices, nor yours. Shoot Red if you want to, let him shoot Alexa if he wants to, don't make this into some federal case against Deakins for going his own way.

If he hasn't shot Red yet, it's primarily because he hasn't had to shoot digital yet for anything -- all of his features have been shot on film. When the time comes to shoot something digitally, he will look at his options, shoot some tests, and trust his eyes. He's not going to be influenced by advertising or even specs on paper, he's going to trust his eyes.
