Definitely getting it!!!

Don't void your warantee this time!

For the others, this is not 'camera insurance' it's breakdown & repair cover, very different indeed.

will it cover the dragon upgrade too or do we have to pay again?

I really doubt you would have to pay again if you upgrade to Dragon before your Armor coverage runs out.

I'm not buying it somewhat on principle at this point. And yes I realize the only person who will suffer for standing on principle will be me not RED.

1) I find warranties kind of a scammy in the first place. "Wait so are you saying you only cover your incompetence for a short time frame?" I've never had a computer or camera break down after 1 year but before 3. If it's a lemon it's usually a lemon right from the get go. If Scarlets are poorly manufactured and unreliable after 1 year, $1500 is going to just me piss me off even more that I spent $11.5k on something poorly made. If it gets dropped and breaks due to my incompetence... I have insurance. My expectation for manufacturing defects is the manufacturer fixes it.
2) It's currently non-transferrable or pro-rated if we sell our scarlet before the Armor goes into effect.
3) No idea whether Dragon upgrades will be covered. And I'm not going to just "buy it on faith".
4) Price seems too high. I know the point of a warranty is to cover the actual costs + a profit but... $1500 over 2 years = $750 a year. That means they either expect 30% of Scarlets to need $5k in repairs during their life (unreliable) or I should just risk the $5k myself.

Red changed their policy too late and still isn't providing enough purchase information for a $1500 product. So no. If they clarify future transfer-ability, Dragon upgrades and pro-rating I'll be happy to buy it (or not) depending on the terms. But buying a $1500 warranty policy without being given the details is unacceptable to me. I doubt this will all be straightened out before mine ships so maybe when I get the Dragon upgrade they'll offer another buy-in opportunity and will have worked out the kinks. But at this point Armor seems half baked unprepared for public consumption.

I was planning on getting the Armor, but not for a couple months. I didn't realize the policy changed until I saw this thread, where we can only get it at the time of purchase. I won't be able to do that, as it wasn't planned for me. I suppose I'll need to rely on other insurance in this case. I would prefer the armor, as I may not be doing as much commercial work at the present, but things are coming in the near future where a faster level of service would be very nice. The extra premium for the Armor should have benefits of better turnaround, etc., I would think. I'll talk to my rep when the time comes, and see what's up.

IT IS WORTH IT!

I bought it because most of the production insurances does not cover failure that is covered in the original warranty. In other words, even if the warranty has run out but the camera fail in something that was initially covered by the manufacturer, you have a chance of not getting your money from the insurance.

It is expensive to be a PRO. Before the digital "revolution" it was even more expensive. For all I have seen so far, RED seems to be trying to offer cost effective solutions. In my previous experiences in filmmaking I never found a company with so much dedication in providing affordable services or products. The rule of the industry is to charge ABSURDE prices based in 2 things, Brand (associated falsely with reliability) and "The Naked King" or "The Emperor New Cloths" effect they where able to create in people that were not able to distinguish between the final quality and just repeated what the rest was saying.

It is less expensive than leaving it to chance. If you can`t afford it you should probably wait a little longer and capitalize before investing in the camera itself. Panasonic can offer 5 years because they have much simpler products, many more years of experience, more samples to collect data from to mesure the real cost of warranty, the pressure to compete head to head with many other manufacturers (I believe that RED is still olone in its price-performance range) and finally they DO include the price on the final product and don't give you the option to buy it or not.

If you want peace of mind, buy it. But if you don't, it's better to start a savings account to cover the "unexpected" ;-)

All the best.
