Are the Red file numbers ordered or random?

Does the reel numbers always increase after you format your red ssd drives? I have some red folders that do not seem to be in order I seem to have A001, A004, A002 where I would expect that they are in order 1,2,4 of course.

I'm confused wondering if I put them in the wrong order.
Thanks

Everytime you reformat an SSD the reel number, "A" will increment by 1. It will go from A001 to A002, etc. If the numbering gets off somehow (IE you restore the camera settings, you format a card but don't end up using it), you can set the reel number manually in the formatting menu.

Thanks guys. That will help me a bit in finding what order the files are meant to be in since the timecode was broken.

So the idea is to never use the same reel number twice on a project, right? This would mean that the same physical REDMAG has increased reel numbers every time it is formatted. If this is the case, how do you (physically) label your REDMAGS?

Or am I getting it wrong, and REDMAG 001 is always formatted with reel number 001, even if it's used again and again? In this case, what will be written on the slate? The random reel identifier that comes after the number?

Thanks for clearing this up for me.

The camera will automatically increment the reel number every time a Redmag is formatted in the camera, unless you manually override that in the menus. It doesn't matter which Redmag you use. As soon as you format it, the reel number will increase by 1. The "A" at the beginning of the file names can also be changed manually in the Slate menu - useful for multi camera shoots so you might label the first camera as Camera "A", the second as Camera "B", the third as Camera "C", etc, so that the file name indicates the camera which that footage came from.

If I physically have say 4 Redmags for Camera A which I rotate as I use them and backup the footage, then I might physically label them with strips of camera tape as "Mag1 Roll01", "Mag2 Roll02", "Mag3 Roll03", "Mag4 Roll04", "Mag1 Roll05", "Mag2 Roll06", "Mag3 Roll07", "Mag4 Roll08", "Mag1 Roll09", etc. And if I have 4 Redmags for Camera B, I might physically label them "Mag5 Roll01", "Mag6 Roll02", "Mag7 Roll03", "Mag8 Roll04", "Mag5 Roll05", "Mag6 Roll06", "Mag7 Roll07", "Mag8 Roll08", "Mag5 Roll09".

The Mag number is only there to identify a physical Redmag so that if a Redmag starts corrupting footage then the DIT can identify that Redmag and take it out of circulation - it doesn't appear on the slate.

But you can use any labelling system which your DIT, editor & script supervisor agree - as long as it's not confusing days, weeks, months or longer down the line.

On the slate, you write the Camera identifier letter A, B, C, D, etc depending how many cameras you have. The Roll number written matches the roll number being recorded on the camera at the time.

The two random characters the camera generates at the end of file names is intended to avoid duplicate file names in the event that someone accidentally forgets to format a Redmag or manually enters an a duplicate Roll number.
