  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Are people going to sell their spots for EPIC trade-in?

I'm thinking about paying premiums to jump the line and get an EPIC earlier than 7000 other cameras by. Would someone who does not want to get an EPIC, but wants to keep the R1 (Stage 2 trade-in IIRC?) do that? Get an EPIC in his name and sell it immediately? What kind of money would those EPICs get on the market?

Any financial analysts among the RED owners? :)

Another funny thing I just figured: RED ONE owners are in some kind of exclusive club now... If I was a rental company and I wanted to order 10 EPIC brains right when they come out I have to wait till 7000 RED ONE owners decide if they want one before me! Isn't that a little bit funny?

Well they definetly wouldn't sell more then the usual price surely so I'd think to beat RED you'd need to sell under the price, given though we are talking about having EPIC's before the general world with potential better specs (last I saw I think some frame rates were higher then the normal S35 EPIC). It's really a mix, I see no need though to keep your RED and give away an EPIC at stage 2... I'd be surprised if someone was going to hand off some great benefits of using the next gen system.

Basically...I can't see this happening but if someone was going to...I can't really see the logic to doing so other then much needed money which I would guess you'd go to stage 3 if that was the case,

But breaking it down

$19,500 to take up the EPIC
Sell it for $28,000 and you'd make a nifty $8,500 BUT you'd lose the EPIC system obviously. The opportunity cost in my opinion between using the epic and selling it off for 8,500 profit is kind of pointless as you'd surely make more then $8,500 from the rentals and more! Think about it as having an EPIC system before the mainstream, especially the lower serial numbers.

but thats just my 2 cents :)

EDIT:

Also taking into account the economy, some areas are still a bit of a problem here and there but it's going to come up, most likely Jannard knows when to release these products right around the bottom of the incline so RED can ride the wave upwards, personally 2010 is going to be an uphill but obviously not heavy. So well worth the thought that rentals may do well but obviously not as great as before the recession still...

A lot of those 7000 are owned by rental houses.
regarding your first question ...
this is where an individual has 19,500 cash to "invest" can he get 10% return say $2000 in six months on his investment after expenses?
Personally if I was investing $20,000 I'd put it down on some real estate. I doubt the EPIC speculation market is the safest. However there will be those who get the EPIC then change their mind ... they should recoup their investment if they sell before all 7000 have had their option delivered.

I think some people will advertise to entice RED Owners to buy a Stage One Epic for them. It will be interesting to see what premium is offered.

I think getting an early EPIC would be difficult. What COULD be possible though is to buy a RED One with MX sensor from somebody who originally was thinking of trading in his MX RED ONE (stage 3) and who then can go for stage 2. I personally could think about this (#441) and I am sure there are others around here who would like to trade in MX RED One.

You basically get Epic image quality minus the 5k and higher frame rates but still higher frame rates than a S35 Scarlet.

I am not sure how that would make economical sense though but it might be for you. I have to say this system with being in line and different stages and upgrades and unknown delivery times is getting all very complicated to me...:confused1:

Yes I thought about the fact that people would sell their MX enabled RED ONEs instead of trading it in with RED but on the other hand, why would someone buy used if they can have new and why would someone sell cheap instead of getting the full trade-in? Indeed very very confusing and hard to follow through with something.

And also, am I the only one that's underwhelmed that this is going to be the EPIC chip? No more surprises, just more framerate, more resolution, less compression (REDCODE xxx), that's it? That's EPIC we can have in our R1X's today? Maybe it's just me :)

Well, it wouldn't be for less money then the trade-in I guess - but that all comes down to what you need at what moment.

Yes, I was thinking about that too. Then you finally have that shiny new camera in your hands after all that waiting and then the quality is the same as your upgraded RED One. Kind of an anti-climax.

Anyway, I seriously hope that RED will have less options for trade-in and upgrading in the future because this is costing way too much time.

Maybe it is just you.

May I suggest a bit of perspective. For all the people who cannot afford Epic, RED has done them a big favor. Upgrade to the simply fan-freakin-tastic new MX sensor (just got back from shooting with it so this is not speculation) for a lower price point.

BTW - "No more surprises" - if that means I keep getting the image I saw tonight (and knowing the Red Team I am sure it will get even better) well into the future I would consider that a PLUS

IF you care to pick this up again after you have actually seen the new sensor in action I'll be around. I'm betting it will leave you speechless.

Cheers - #19
