  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Are people doing "real" editing from the proxies?

I'm getting perfectly smooth results in FCP too. The _M and _H proxies work fine, I'm sticking with _H. The _P proxies still stutter.

For real work though, RedTrip hasn't provided all I need for conform, etc.. So I'm doing a preliminary CC in REDCINE and I output to 1080p ProRes, then I edit and deliver via FCP / Compressor. Good results, nice quality, fairly straight-forward workflow. But it's definitely leaving so much of the camera's ability un-tapped.

As of right now, this workflow situation will have to improve quite a bit for me to follow through with the purchase of my camera. There are other cameras in town I can use in the meantime. My number is up right now too, I'm finalizing accessories with RED, but I'm not sure just when I'll pull the trigger.

I know what you mean. I can deal with it for now, but would love to see it improve. Fortunately (?) we pulled the trigger on ours. So we anxiously await the day our camera comes (hopefully next week).

This would make sense on Avid since it creates new media out of a Quicktime import. Does it retain proper timecode?

No, sadly Avid doesn't import timecode tracks from QT movies. However there's a handy app called Metacheater that's working around that by creating an ALE file from the media that you can then batch import with.

But currently there's no way back to RedCine, but Avid is working on it.

I feel you. I think the RED workflow still needs some big development before I'll buy into it. We've been testing REDCINE in XP on a QUAD CORE with SLI and we're still around 10 - 1 in render times to output into something we can edit.

For me thats hard.... after coming from a P2 workflow thats so much faster than realtime to ingest.

I'm sure it's a matter of time. But this is one thing I don't mind NOT:calm: being an early adopter.

Right now I am limited to build 13 for somethings because this build supports the best workflow.

I use Cineform/Premiere. My workflow is as follows:
Shoot
Dump Footage on Hard Drive
Use RedCine to write down which takes I like, or use Script Super's notes, whichever is faster.
Move takes I wish to "Print" to a special directory.
Drop in Cineform Command line and Develop all takes to 12bit 4:4:4 files. (this is a one step process... Type command line and select all, then his enter.. done)

Take files into Premiere and edit them. These are my uncorrected ONLINE files. Not proxies. Editing in 1080p or 2k is real time.

out put edit to color corrector, or correct in Premiere using Color Finesse (Not real time playback, but it works, is solid, and does not crash!)

Done.

It's simple, fast and works for me.

I am sorry in that this is NOT an apple workflow.. but I felt you might want to know it is possible to edit NOT using proxies at all.. Forgive me if this is not cool to put this here.. Mods, feel free to delete

On the same site as MetaCheater, I provided Jabez a modified CMX3600 EDL that support 16 character source names. If you go with the default setting of A001, A002, etc, then any EDL will work with the timecode. That is the whole purpose of MetaCheater - provide TAPE ID and timecode for conform processes.

I'm in the same situation. I may wait to see what happens with accessories at NAB. But as far as the workflow, I'm not convinced this is practical enough to sell to clients yet. I'm getting inquiries but don't have any real data I can point to that show's how well this is working.

It's funny how fast some things change...

In the 2 & 1/2 weeks since I posted that comment, I have made more "workflow discoveries" and Crimson Workflow has come along to further increase my options for working with this camera footage on a tighter budget.

RED is at the point where I think I can sell it to a good number of my existing clients. I have a few potential new clients waiting that are interested in RED.

I plan to follow through with my RED purchase soon. ...Gotta get back in town, pay my taxes, I may just go to NAB and check out a few things before I finish up my RED purchase, but I may take delivery before NAB. But for me, the workflow is no longer the hold-up. ...It never really was, but I know a lot of people have such concerns and it is entirely valid. Workflow is a big hurdle for small shops and indies on a tight budget. But it's one of those things where part of the consideration of buying into this camera system has to include the capacity for working with the footage.

I was getting great results editing with the proxies (_H) and using the settings NateWeaver had posted. I had the orange bar, but playback was fine and I was able to cut scenes without any sacrifice. (So thank you Nate!)

UNTIL ONE DAY... my computer crashed. Firefox froze, and I had to do a manual shut down and restart.

Now I can't playback more than 3 seconds of footage in the timeline without FCP stopping. I've checked my render setting, they're the same as they were. I'm using the same sequences that were working fine before. I've tried restarting and crossing my fingers.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

UPDATE: Fixed my own problem. I was about to send all my footage through Compressor when I got an error message about REDCODE.qt- so I re-installed RedCode for both QT and FCP and now everything works like it did before.
