Thats all great, but pretty much a waste if you cant go out with a 1080 4:4:4 signal (dual link) which is not possible from RED. LTO-4 makes a lot more sense, especially since you retain the RAW 4K files.

Have you ever worked in network (or even cable) television that you would make such a statement? Why would an HDCam SR master be a "waste", regardless of whether it is 4:2:2 or 4:4:4? It's the most common delivery element used today - not to mention that it's likely the most popular archival format as well - and especially for a reality show, why would you ever need anything better? Who cares about a format you can't even distribute today (4K) when you're talking about a television reality show? What kind of shelf life do you think these things really have, and what makes you think that image quality plays any significant role in that?

Simple- Why would you waste a $125,000 deck on a 720p output. RED CANT OUTPUT 1080!

Yes I deliver to networks all the time, I've been doing it for 27 years. The question wasnt about delivery to a network it was about ARCHIVING. Yes it is a WASTE to archive on HDCAM SR with a camera that only outputs a 720P signal, and I already own the deck. I use HDCAM SR to deliver dubs (in 1080 444), not archive 4k masters.

BTW- this is the quote I was responding too...its even quoted in my post:
"actually like going out to HD-CAM SR for back-up"

To answer the specific questions in your very angry post;
1. Becuse if you archive the RAW 4K file you can go back and reedit the original footage and deliver in any format you wish. If you only have a 720P master you are screwed.
2. You believe that HDCAM has a longer shelve life that LTO?

who was talking about a reality show only?

One other thing to consider regarding "the most popular archival format"...I have a library full of the most popular archival format of my day, Beta SP...they arent doing me much good today are they? Speaking of the most popular archival formats...ever heard of U-Matic...got a room full of them too. At least with all my film, I can go back and scan the negs again and benefit from the newer technology and formats...can even get 2K and 4K from my 15 year old film...kinda like LTO huh?
