What are your views on APS lenses vs the new sharp fast Canon L lenses?

Aps is made for sensors like in the Epic, but are they as sharp and fast as the Canon L lenses?

If so, which canon aps lenses compare well with the L lenses?
Are they as sharp and fast?

Thanks!!

Can APS cover the entire Dragon sensor too?

Noone has any experience to share on aps-h lenses for red epic compared to the L canons?

It's such a broad question, it's hard to answer.

Yes, APS-H lenses cover EPIC, and will probably cover Dragon.

There aren't that many APS-H specific lenses. Which ones did you have in mind?

The Tokina 11-16 is supposed to cover APS-H. But it's more common to find lenses designed to cover APS-C, than APS-H. (Presumably because there is a much bigger consumer market for APS-C).

In regards Canon L lenses, they are all FULL FRAME, and most are very sharp. They work great on Epic. Their "mechanics" are automated (auto-focus, auto-aperture), so the workflow is not exactly the same as manual focus lenses, but people are doing great work with them, so that should be answer enough.

Hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for your reply.. so I guess full frame lenses are best for the epic...
I like them but it all comes out a little too bokeh-ey for my taste. Gets tiresome after a few minutes... I suppose I need to study the lenses that give me a good sharp focus foreground and back...

So stop down. A 50mm is a 50mm. If it covers the sensor, it will look the same at the same f-stop.

Remember, it's not the full frame lens that makes the background get more shallow, but the full frame sensor.

The Epic's sensor is not as big as full frame, so you're field of view will be smaller, and for the same shot your choice of lens won't be as long/telephoto as it would on full frame.

And as David said, you can always stop down at shoo at F4, 5.6, f8, etc
