  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Appreciation...

I'd start with people like David Mullen, who has donated his time to the cause of helping young and interested enthusiasts understand just about anything they can think of. Imagine having a trained professional that will answer each of your questions... wow. Only here. I can't thank David enough...

David and Mike really stand out for me as people that many of us (particularly outside of LA) don't get to interact with on a regular basis, to be able to ask David how he would light a scene or to give a breakdown on a certain scene you liked is priceless, we shouldn't forget that there are others at Davids level of the profession that charge 5 figures for a 1 day workshop where all you get really is the ability to ask said questions.

Also yourself Jim, as a business graduate and multiple business owner, the ability now and again to probe your early days at Oakley and the progress of your own career is amazing. I'm sure you know many of your business contemporaries do their paid lunch dates with business students and how much they charge for them. For you to come on RedUser at some crazy hour of the night and chat for hours is something really special.

And there are many of us out here who don't own RED's however much of our business has come to revolve around support services, be it DIT work, post production etc etc, so the amount of jobs and talent you have created and unleashed by proxy is very significant, I would probably say in the tens of thousands.

So here's to successful years gone past and successful years to come.

RED's amazing indelible mark on the industry is directly linked to the democratization and access that you've provided for everyone.
RED put the ability to own equipment that was previously reserved for rental houses in the hands of a huge creative pool of people.
Between that and this forum where we get a window into the company and get to give input and feedback at every step of development at almost ANY hour is insanely amazing.

Getting to personally know Jarred, Ted and the rest of team has been a bonus to the camera/company that has changed so much in this industry.

Congrats to Brent and Kelly on their new addition!

Jason

This is a good thread. It's kind of a slow-down moment where we get to read many of our stories as customers and how they co-mingle with the big picture of the RED story. Makes for a feel-good Saturday morning.

The appreciation goes both ways -thanks Jim & co. for not compromising. You care, and what to get it right, hence Epic...Hence the Bomb, Hence SSD, Hence HDRx, Hence Graeme's constant refinements...and I'm sure we'll be seeing a whole lot more real soon.

And THIS is why RED succeeds. My first "RED" NAB was 2007, because I was going to put my deposit down on this new camera that seemed to be exactly what I was hoping it was, but being new to this side of the industry, I had to make sure because I was concerned by the vaporware/scam comments. That and the sensor name "Mysterium" really had me wondering if you guys were for real. But I met you, shook your cigar-free hand and it was off to the races. Put my $1,000.00 deposit down and waited a full year before my camera arrived. It has been a blast ever since, even in a rotten economy.

Fanboy? Absolutely. When a company is this transparent, when I can talk directly with everyone, and HAVE on multiple occasions, that speaks volumes about the direction of the company, its people and its leadership.

Have met some great friends along the way too and added some great industry connections, all due to the shared efforts of the way RED is structured and how this community welcomes those who are willing to learn and grow. There are simply too many names to single out here, but you know who you are.

Looking forward to EPIC.

Yeah, we're incredibly grateful for the RED folks. Time and again they have come to the rescue of our little production company. Kelly, in particular, will always have a soft place in my heart for that reason alone.

I love the RED One and am looking forward to the future.

Stephen

Good friends

Good friends

I remember when I first met Jim... He not only shook my hand, but that of my Wife and my Mother who were both with me at the time. Sadly I was not at the 1st NAB, however I can say that it only took me 10 min from the time I first read about Jim and RED to the time I sent in my deposit. My "R" sits on my desk to this day.

RED has had a direct influence in my life, I have said this before, but it was the support of both Jim and Jarred who got me started on the RED101 DVD. And that allowed me to get to know over 800 of you from all over the world. This has given birth to something even larger that I hope to be able to talk about in the next week or so.

Before RED I had never been on a Forum! I had NO IDEA how to behave (As some people on here will remember... Ouch!). It's been an incredible ride.

Jim, Jarred.. It's never been about the camera to me. That's just a hunk of metal. A really COOL hunk of metal, but still... No, it's about the TEAM, the PEOPLE. This is why I put down that deposit so long ago, and why I still have faith in all you do today.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at NAB.

Jay

Jim, I'm glad you posted this as I had cause to post something similar myself.

I appreciate what you are doing - literally taking your vision and making it into reality. And you take it further by coming on here as the head honcho to listen to what people have to say, to give requested information, and to just be a guy who loves cameras and motion pictures. What a great way to run a company.

I appreciate the team you have built around you at RED. People like Graeme, Jarred, Ted, Deanan, and all the rest who are not only extremely talented at what they do, but who are also able to come on here and give us the same - extremely respectful - treatment. Answering questions, providing information, discussing both realistic and theoretical aspects of cameras - these duties are rarely carried out in a similarly enthusiastic, accurate, and honest manner. Personally, I know Graeme must have spent at least a couple of hours reading and responding to my stupid questions.

And I appreciate the contributions that everyone makes to this forum - there are some incredibly knowledgeable people who post here and it makes it not only a fun place to be, but also inherently resourceful and educational. It's hard to walk away from the screen having learned nothing at all.

Appreciation between both sides RED as a company and REDUsers or its customers (old, new and potential) stands pretty good and strong all the time.

Also congratulations to Brent and Kelly on their on upcoming baby.

Congratulations and thanks to Red, Jim, Brent, Kelly, Reduser.net et al.

It's been a wild ride so far, with much more to come!

This post is solely to remind everyone how much we appreciate the support.

We are fully RED because of the suggestions, comments and patience of our customers and posters here. The interaction with everyone has made RED a better company.

I'd start with people like David Mullen, who has donated his time to the cause of helping young and interested enthusiasts understand just about anything they can think of. Imagine having a trained professional that will answer each of your questions... wow. Only here. I can't thank David enough...

The shape of our program has changed because of you. The time you have spent here has made a huge difference in what we are doing. I hope it is apparent that we are here and listening, sometimes to 4am. We are aware that this interaction is not normal in any industry... and we like it.

We are always late, but worth the wait. Only a dedicated group of friends would put up with this. We count you as just that.

I hope many of you can make NAB... for selfish reasons. I'd just like to meet you and shake your hand. You have helped shape what RED is...

Thanks again... it is a long road ahead.

Jim

Jim,

is truly an Honor to be part of RED ;)

People tell me, how can I be so attached to RED, its only a Camera company, and I simply reply, "NO IT IS NOT"!!

RED has inspired and motived me at times when I was the wickets, and give me the desire and strength to do better, I have
come to know almost every one at RED, and I never seen the level of dedication the RED Team has for us, and the commitment
from "YOU" yourself is simply astounding, you are a very lucky man, not because of RED, but because you were blessed of
people like Jarred, Graeme, Ted, Brent and Kelly, Travis, and Matt to name a few, this community here @ Reduser is just a HUGE Family... or is it?

I just wish God gives me a little more strength and health to give back to RED and this community a small part of what it has been given me ;)

I also like to take this opportunity to Publicly Congratulate Kelly and Brent for their coming SON, and wish them
the absolutely very best in life and a Healthy Child ;)

A great team starts with the individual with the vision and skills to assemble and motivate. I suspect Oakley had a similar corporate culture, part of its great success. This time around, add the new model of communication and customer relations created by the web (this forum). I agree with the earlier post about how Red will be studied as a groundbreaking model for businesses in other sectors.

Thanks to the whole team.

As primarily a Post guy, located in the Midwest US, my initial exposure to RED was slow and at first I didn't really grasp the magnitude of what was happening. I wasn't at any of the RED Days or even NAB to see the beginnings of the process. I wasn't an early adopter (although I now wish I had been). But as the shock waves RED created finally started to penetrate out to my area, I realized that this was a phenomenon that was going to change the whole industry.

Since then, I've become an avid consumer of all information RED. I read this forum constantly for the words and wisdom of all of you who are fortunate enough to be in the center of the action. I watch Jim, Jarred and the rest of RED Team interact with everyone in a way that I've never ever seen in my 30 years in the industry. The transparency, frankness, and total willingness to share information is mind-boggling when I think of the secrecy policy that most companies choose. Now that I am an educator, I have the opportunity to influence aspiring professionals, and I tell them, "Watch RED closely, they are changing this industry before your very eyes, and you better be paying attention".

I hope to finally be a RED owner myself someday soon. In the meantime, thanks again to Jim, Jarred, Ted, RED Team, and everyone on REDUser for letting me peak behind the curtain. And special thanks to Gibby, Ketch, and David Mullen...I have read pretty much every word you guys have written, and the knowledge I've gained is irreplaceable!

I used to teach film history.

It has been much more fun to live it.

Thanks for all that you and your team have done to take us along for the ride on rocketship RED.

It is more than a camera. It is a way of life.

I've learned more, met more unique people, and had more interesting experiences in such a short time, than I ever would have dreamed.

I chalk it up to those milk girls.

When I first started reading about this project, in the very early (and now obliterated) dvinfo brainstorming thread, I thought to myself, "well, it is fascinating to dream about, but it's certainly more camera than I'll ever need."

And then the milk girls dropped out of the sky and I couldn't stop looking at that shot, admiring its unique texture.

It was a great shot, of course, in terms of composition and color - but my god, the texture was unlike anything I had imagined from a digital camera.

That shot changed my small-minded thinking completely. I couldn't get it out of my head. "No" turned to "yes."

I sold a few assets and threw down for not one, but two, RED cameras.

The ripples from the little boulder you have dropped in my pond have spread very far and wide.

You have triggered many of us to aim higher and think bigger, not just because of a machine you invented but also because of who you are --

I think that is the true miracle of RED.

muchas gracias --

P.S. and congratulations to Brent and Kelly, what a lovely legacy - sending good vibes out to the birth of your little one...

I’ve been hanging out on RedUser for the last 18 months, occasionally posting but mostly lurking. I’m thankful for everything I’ve learned from people like Jeff Kilgroe, Steve Gibby, David Mullen, the Red Team, and others too numerous to name. I’m thankful for the open and honest communication from Jim and Jarred, and of course for Jim’s vision to make awesome equipment at a reasonable price. But, most of all, I’m thankful to be part of a community that offers education, inspiration and a sense of comfort and familiarity. Thanks everybody.

Jim, you are like family and I've never shaken your hand. Not only am I grateful for my RED cameras, but for your example. You inspire me to be a better leader in my company. Thank you.

This April I'll do my best to find you and shake your hand.

Phil

Guys, it's a total two-way street - I'm sure I speak for everyone here when I say I really appreciate the approach Red takes with listening to those of us who use your cameras and constantly pushing the boundaries of what's possible with digital cinematography. It's been a great ride indeed!

Although we're "only" camera number 1083, I've been an avid follower and supporter of the project since it first sprang up with a single basic web page and a couple of posts on DVInfo and DVXUser - crazy to think how far the whole project has come since then...

I'll be coming to my first NAB this year (a good year to pick, it would seem!), and I'm very much looking forward to finally meeting the Red crew - and getting a first hand look at EPIC, of course!

Thanks for all the hard work - trust me, it's worth it, and it doesn't go unnoticed!!

See you there...
Dom.

I can say I have never felt like a filmmaker (despite having made some 40 docs) because I never believed in the technology I used. I always felt half way there. I'm sure you know this Red; but you finally have given all of us filmmaker outside of hollywood the tools we want, and need to be truly inspired, and not have to compromise.

12 months from now I plan to leave docs and direct features. Without red, it's a dream that would not happen. I'm sure there are hundreds out there like me.

Unfortunately I was not an early adopter, but thanks for letting us share in the excitement of those that were, and we wait patiently (most of the time) because our day will come.

There is are few people who can really say they change the course of filmmaking, certainly everyone at red can, along with the early adopters.

Thanks, see you at NAB.

Way back in '05 or so, when RED.COM was still the white page with the funny car on it talking about 4520x2540 resolution, I admittedly didn't know what to think.

I was there at NAB '06 as well... I knew right then and there that something special was happening. I just knew I was going to buy one of those cameras and I wandered around NAB thinking about it. I started to put in my reservation more than once, but ultimately I did not while attending the show. A decision I have regretted ever since and something I regularly still kick myself for. The timing just wasn't right for me then I guess.

A few months later, I decided it was right and I faxed my reservation form to RED... Kelly called me back almost immediately. And in the most cheerful and sweet voice imaginable, told me that she was sorry and reservations were closed. So I jokingly asked, "What? Did they just close yesterday?". And it turns out they had. haha.

So anyway, got my RED One reservation a couple months later when they re-opened the queue...

RED Day Vegas was a lot of fun last year. I can't wait to see what they'll show us this year. I keep hoping I'll have an Epic land on my doorstep before then (X or M), I guess we'll see...
