  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple’s Next Gen MacBook Pro 2012

Just bought a maxed out retina MacBook Pro, hoping for the best.

Are we sure the 17" is done? Don't they release the 17" versions after the 15"?

Anyone else sad to see the 17" go away?

With that resolution you could easily have gone to a 27" screen, (a la iMac) but with a 15" frame dimension I doubt the human eye's ability to fully appreciate it.

Loving the new display on the next-gen Macbook Pro. Also loving that it's not just the resolution, but a high quality IPS display (a first for Macbooks) as well. Really interested to find out who is making these displays? My money is on LG Display. Always wondered what a 15 inch Sony Vaio Z would turn out like - this is pretty close. Intel is very confident that every premium laptop 15 inches and up will feature 3840x2160 displays by early 2013, but I think Apple have taken the right decision in not waiting for that and going with 2880 in 2012 instead. It's still more than enough resolution for these type of displays, although there is no doubt 3840 is coming within a few months.

It seems much closer to the Air family than Pro. It doesn't seem to be upgradeable at all. I would have much preferred if it was 0.9" or so (which is still pretty thin, and it wouldn't have been any lighter) but upgradeable, shipping with a much faster GPU. etc. Those seem much more important to a "professional" solution than obsessing over shaving a tenth or two inches on a 15 inch laptop, which is never going to be all that portable. Before you say USB 3 or Thunderbolt - no, it is not a magic solution. The aforementioned Vaio Z has been shipping with an external GPU via Thunderbolt (it was actually the very first use of Thunderbolt, even before Light Peak got its branding as Thunderbolt) and even though we are into the 3rd gen Z we have seen how the latencies and limited PCIe bandwidth cripple mid-range GPUs, let alone high-end ones like GTX 680M or HD 7970M.

The rest of the updates are pretty stale, however. I am not seeing the appeal of those dated 1366/1440 6-bit TN panels when nearly every 2nd gen ultrabook above $999 is shipping (or releasing shortly) with high quality 8-bit 1920 IPS displays. Even 11.6 inch ones like the Zenbook Prime.

It is certainly a possibility that a 17 inch will come next year. Maybe they are waiting for those 3840 panels. I wouldn't hold my breath, however.

Is this new Macbook Pro Retina 15" (maxed out) with Thunderbolt storage an option for editing Red footage (in CS6, 1080p output, no heavy animation or effects, just basic color and effects) or is it still too sluggish? (only good as offload and DIT computer?) Thoughts? Thanks!

Thanks Chris! Glad to hear it. I know its not an ideal solution, but I don't need to edit real-time at full res yet...

Ordered

anyone knows the max resolution out of the HDMI port (without having to sacrifice the bandwith out of thunderbolt port instead)?
trying to see if i can drive a 30" 2560x1600 out of it.

also was wondering if it's 10bit out of there (unlikely)?

Wouldn't that just be STUPID if it was only 8 bit? BUT---yep, it probably is....

The MBPR can simultaneously light up its built-in display along with two additional external displays at up to 2560x1600, connected through either HDMI or Thunderbolt. Same with the MBP, but you can only power one additional external display through Thunderbolt.

There's no info available as to whether the output signal is 8- or 10-bit. Though, I'll test that out when mine arrives.

BUT---be sure to go to Adobe and do a Feature Request to enable THIS card....Currently Adobe does not support this card.....but with 384 cuda cores...it's a must.

Adobe will be adding support for all of Nvidia's 600-series mobile GPUs soon. Very soon. Count on it.

Never buy your RAM from Apple. :-)

Except the RAM is soldered in so... yeah, you have to. And the jump from 8gb to 16gb at $200 ($180 if you buy @ academic pricing) isn't priced at much of a premium, if at all above going market rate.

How about the older macbook pro--2010 i think...with 330m series NVIDIA card? I've looked high and low and all i can figure out is there is NO Cuda support for that card within NVIDiA....and that would also mean Adobe....

The new machines look great to me and I can live without an optical drive and firewire port but I cannot believe they got rid of the ethernet!! I use ethernet ALL THE TIME when transferring data between SANs and servers and when streaming live video. Yes, the $30 adapter can be used, but the idea of tying up an entire Thunderbolt port which could be used for such more useful tasks as connected to a massive RAID array or an SDI capture box makes me mad.

I know the retina display is not a professional grading monitor, but can it be calibrated to acceptable RGB levels ?

I've seen complaints on creative cow how the blacks are crushed etc.
