New logic board installed by Apple 1 month ago was $419 on my 2007 MBP
And you'd bought AppleCare on 2 MB Pros, you'd have paid $281 more than that.

It's your money, but in the past 9 years, i've owned 4 Macbook Pros and 3 Mac towers. If I'd bought Applecare for them all I'd have spent $2143. In that time, I've had one of the Macbooks back to the Apple store for replacement of a battery that was faulty. It was after the warranty ran out, but they replaced it for free.
YMMV, but I've saved $2143 by not buying Applecare.
Also, Applecare does not cover "accident, abuse, neglect, misuse (including faulty installation, repair, or maintenance by anyone other than Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider), unauthorized modification, extreme environment (including extreme temperature or humidity), extreme physical or electrical stress or interference, fluctuation or surges of electrical power, lightning, static electricity..." so buying it because you might drop the Macbook won't really help.
You didn't "save" this money, you simply decided to self insure and this amount remains in your insurance account.
Like someone pointed out, Applecare is a form of insurance. You hope you don't need it, but... :crying:
I have owned probably 25 or more Macs since 1984. I am not sure when they started offering AppleCare but for many years I didn't bother with it, either. But, the last few years, I think the build quality of Mac is not quite what it used to be - and the units are probably that much more capable, with a lot of electronics packed in there. So, in the last 5 years or so, I have been getting AppleCare - first just for laptops but I even got it for my recently purchased 6-core Mac Pro. So far, I have NEVER needed it - a waste of money? I don't think so... peace of mind. I'd say, get it and sleep a little better. :thumbup1:
...
Why would I give them that money when the product, by design, takes more from me than it provides?
...
Unless I am missing something, all "products" (as well as services) are designed to do that in a capitalist system. Yes, it's called profit. Insurance falls into that category.
The real question is not how much it costs them to do repairs, but does it cost YOU less for the repairs than for the insurance?
Lets put it this way...
The one machine I failed to buy Applecare for - 2008 MB Pro -
recently suffered a complete Logic Board failure (not due to the NVIDIA 8600)
This is on a lightly used machine. WTF?!
Its a $330 replacement fee - I had gotten used to Apple reliability and just plain didn't think to purchase AppleCare after the 1 year warranty had expired.
Expensive lesson.
