To complement our recently launched RED BETA Firmware Program, we are working to roll out a BETA program for RED Software and Plug-Ins. While this becomes available, we would like direct users to download our initial BETA Plug-In (RED Apple Workflow Installer v14 BETA 1). Please visit RED.com to download the software and contact redbeta@red.com with any input. We will be reaching out to users who download this BETA as we get closer to formally rolling out the RED BETA Software program.

We'd like to get your feedback on how this BETA works and whether the direction we're going in makes sense for you and your workflow. Please read everything below before commenting. First up the release notes:

  • Creative 3D Lut sidecar now gets applied properly if media imported is left in the original place. If copy to library is selected sidecar files need to be manually copied and RMD removed so it can be regenerated.
  • IPP2 clips will come in as Rec.2020 with HDR2084 if forced Legacy is not set.
  • IPP2 clips forced to Legacy will import with Rec.2020 and HDR2084.
  • Legacy clips forced to IPP2 will have their default color space & gamma mapped to a valid IPP2 option on import.
  • In Forced IPP2 mode only IPP2 valid color space & gamma options are available when modifying RED RAW settings.
  • Revert to neutral will default to Rec.2020 and HDR2084 if forced IPP2 is on.
  • Fixed: OpenCL memory leak.
  • Fixed: Missing audio for incomplete DSMC clips.
  • Fixed: Regression issue in high frequency handling in IPP2 demosaic or when DEB is enabled in Legacy mode.

The primary focus for this release is improving how clips come in to Final Cut Pro X in IPP2 mode. The widest pipe in FCPX is in Rec.2020 and HDR2084, so that's what we will default to for IPP2 clips (unless RMD specifies otherwise). This is in line with the IPP2 philosophy where the color space and gamma are not tied to a clip, but to the image pipeline, either for monitor, exporting or getting the best image in to a third party pipe. Please let us know how this is working for you and your thoughts on this approach.

If these changes prove challenging for your workflow, please let us know how you feel it could be improved. Do you feel clips coming in as Rec.2020 / HDR2084 should be a preference setting? If so, what options would you like to see for that?

Existing projects will not see the above color space & gamma changes as FCPX will have already written the RMD files that overwrite these. For the same reason Creative 3D Lut sidecar files will also not be applied as the RMD files would not be referencing them. Do note that Creative 3D Lut sidecar files currently only get imported correctly when the media is left in the original location (versus copied in to the library).

This release will be the last release with the QuickTime codec, Log and Transfer and Color plugins.

Hey Rob!

I haven't had a chance to download and test yet, but just from your description, I still think it would be best to add a preference setting for the color and gamma space, as I feel like most endusers are still working in an SDR workflow.

So would it be possible to have an HDR and SDR preference setting. And maybe with a label after it describing exactly what color and gamma space it is. Sort of like this:

HDR (REC 2020 + HDR2084)
SDR (REC 709 + BT1886)

And as a bonus, if the user could create their own preset too that would be great! Like say they need to do an SDR @ 2.2 gamma instead. They should be able to set up a REC 709+ 2.2 project and save it to that menu.

I agree with Marcus, just tried this and without HDR workflow/monitor it is not user friendly. It would be best in my opinion if FCP could bring up the files as they appear when recorded on the monitor/or in RCX, that is without having to use the FCP adding a camera LUT and then a creative LUT. The creative LUT should also be able to be toggled on/off since FCP does not have that capability currently.

Agreed. I'm living in a space where I have a very trustworthy SDR monitor (FSI DM240) that can kinda do HDR in a pinch. But there's not yet an HDR monitor that's (1) affordable, (2) well-calibrated across REC2100, and (3) 1000+ nits. When that day comes, I'll be getting one.

Thanks for the feedback guys. We were thinking of going in a similar direction, so it's good to hear we seem to be aligned.

Yeah I would really like FCPX and RedcineX to be perfectly inline with each other without needing to add an additional LUT. Will it be possible for the 'Modify RED RAW Settings" popup to match all of the basic controls in RedcineX? Is that something Apple will need to update or is that under your control? FLUT Control is no longer a thing in Redcine when using IPP2, so it would be nice for all this to match up if set to IPP2 in System Prefs. I just got my DSMC2 Gemini and don't really have any intention of using the Legacy pipeline.

Yes, the plan is to update the settings dialog as well.

FCPX and RCX should match. Please let us know if it doesn't!

Sweet! Downloaded. 👊🏼

Any updates on this? Having shot some stuff with my DSMC2 Gemini using IPP2, it is definitely a bit annoying to change out the R3D settings for each clip. I don't really see a situation where I wouldn't be using REDWideGamutRGB and Log3G10. Are you guys close to having full IPP2 implementation in FCPX? Would really like FCPX to just display clips exactly as they were displayed in camera out of the box, similar to Redcine.

Hi Andrew, not sure if you know this but if you select all your clips on the fcpx browser and then in info go to modify redraw settings, and change it to log3g10, the change will affect all clips. The same method works if you select all clips and go to info and select the log profile of your preference. Still takes one or two steps but definitely much faster than going one by one!

Ah very nice thank you!

Sorry for this question guys...BUT i came in late ....my FCPx and RCX look COMPLETELY different. Not sure what settings should best be set in RCX and then FCPx....should FCPx be set to Wide Gamut? or 709? But all the work i do in RCX to get the image looking good and i can get it looking great in RCX, but then i pull into FCPx and everything goes back to scratch...and it's a HUGE letdown to have to start over and grade again. While i must admit i dont know much about what settings in RCX i should choose, but i do have it set to IPP2 pipeline and colorspace rec 709 and gamma set to BT1886....these settings given to me quite a while back by someone at RED....but now they may not be relevant? Anyway, over in RCX i'm set to IPP2 and Color sapce is REDWideGamutRGB and Gamma Curve Log3G10.....no matter what i set to in preferences...but again main problem is in fcpx all my work in RCX is for nothing...would be great to have a quick guide to how best to make images match.

....any word on this would be greatly appreciated Rob....and thanks in advance.

....Just downloaded V14 beta for apple workflow...so what i think i see is that we now have more choices for color space and gamma curve to match what we set in RCX --- would that be a correct statement? And is there a suggested setup in RCX...for FCPx workflow...what color space to choose and Gamma? i realize that's probably a stupid question...but what i dont understand is when i make my choices in the prefs...when i open RCX i see for Colorspace: REDWideGamutRGB and Gamma Curve: Log 3G10....even when i have chose something different in the Preferences....??

Hi,

Can I ask why I can't see adjustment options for highlight rolloff in FCPX plugin? Also there is no IPP2/Legancy settings, just a long list of gammas and colour spaces. I know keeping to Redwidegamut and log 3G10 is what IPP2 basically is but there is nothing in the options that's says IPP2 which makes me think this plugin has not been 100% updated yet. I'm running most recent beta plugin.

Cheers

Tom
