This is one of those, "everything old is new again" kind of things. Just about anything optical or mechanical related to 3D has been tried in the past 100 years. If Apple said they invented some kind of new OLED screen or some GPU or some something that nobody had ever seen before that brought about some capability we cannot conceive of right now because we aren't Steve Jobs, then I'd be impressed. This strikes me as something that will have no significant impact on the world of 3D. I have not seen the Toshiba 3D screen but first hand account from colleagues who have say it is nothing more than a state of the art 17" autostereo display, which frankly is not impressive to me. The best "glasses free" autostereo screen that has been shown in my opinion was the very last Phillips display, shown in January 2009 at the SD&A show in San Jose two months prior to Phillips completely leaving the autostereo market (a significant blow to that market sector by all accounts). This was a 4k LCD with incredibly fine lenticular array. It was a example of kaizen and a substantial improvement over previous attempts. The problem would seem to be, if everybody gets used to 4K TV and then we ask them to accept 4K 3D TV that's nearly as good as current HD, it will seem like a disappointment. Also, the manufacturing precision and additional components required for such a set would make it significantly more costly than a non-autostereo TV. I am sorry to say, 3D glasses are likely to be with us for some time, so get your prescription filled in a nice pair of Oakley's or else tune in to 2D.
