  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple to hold “Back to the Mac” media event October 20

iCrap !
but imagine life without iPods, iPhones and iPads..

My issue isn't with iPods, iPhones and iPads. It's with how Apple tries to make a silly programs like iMovie seem like the next best thing since sliced bread. They should put more emphasis on improving FCP and all the bugs that Color has. But, I guess they're mostly concerned with the market that's making them the most money. The pros will just have to wait and see.

I agree

The cube flopped, what makes you think they would go there again?

Why go there?

I'd argue that they already have and its called the Mac Mini and the iMac.

The interesting question around the Cube isn't whether or not it failed, but why. The answer is that it wasn't technologically ready.

Well the technology came along that could make the cube really work... and so now they've surpassed its original design. The Mac Mini is the cube... but a third the size, and the iMac is a beautiful expression of the all in one computer.

That isn't the computer people are asking for though, which makes your point a straw man.

They are asking for a computer that fits the range of the "normal" desktop compute box..

Its a Mac Pro... but instead of expensive Xeon processors, they'd like the product line extended to the Core i series processors. Swap the Xeon single core Mac Pro's for a Core i7 mainboard, and offer a host of BTO options up and down the processor line... including a number of video cards.

Its an easy build for Apple & there is still profit to be made aplenty. Its an example of how Apple, mostly Jobs, can't be bothered to listen to their customers.

I have an iPad and an iPhone which I'm pretty happy with.. but gosh after being a loyal Mac desktopper for 12yrs and truckloads of money, I couldn't be happier in PCland.. It's a beautiful place.. my only problem is with Premiere and how you can't make master clips from two separate clips, only nest.. Plus, building my own computer was pretty cool..

That's one of the main things I do not like about Apple. The have zero customer relations when it comes to feedback on their products. Only when it's major issues do they really seem to take notice.

No USB 3.0 yet, no blu ray drives, and now trying to make the desktop into iOS. I think it might be in the near future that I drop Apple...

Let us be honest here.

Let us be honest here.

Not really - the last FCS was released on July last year, so I wouldn't expect the next version to be available for a little while yet - perhaps an announcement around February or March?

I could be wrong though - although FCS 3 had some nice features, it seemed like a bit of a hold-over until they finish rewriting FCP (which they're very likely doing), so the new suite might see an early release.

We all know the last pseudo update was mediocre, one that should have been free.

WOOOW were you Wrong

WOOOW were you Wrong

I enjoy Apple conjecture, so I'll engage in some.

I wouldn't worry about the future of Pro Apps.

Apple understands that one key to their success with the various iThings is that they sort of own the ecosystem for content creation- and those are definitely content consumption devices.

That said, I expect no announcements on the Pro App front. Not until fully 64 bit Grand Central and OpenCL enabled versions are ready to go. Maybe around NAB.

What I do expect is updated Macintosh computers. The event is called "Back to the Mac" and features a tawny furred big cat in its logo- probably a Lion.

The big thing I am hoping for is lightpeak... but I don't get the idea that its ready. Still its the one technology that could change the landscape for Mac computers- especially

I hope for the introduction of an desktop model called "Mac" ... not an all in one like the iMac or the Mini... but a "traditional" desktop. If that happens, expect some fairly serious innovation in what a "traditional" desktop is.

We may see small updates to the Mac Pro- processor bumps or the like. Conceivably a system with more PCIe slots. Hopefully a new selection of video cards. Minor stuff most likely.

The same sort of thing might happen with the laptops, iMac and Mac Mini. I still hope for a Expresscard slot or two in iMac & Mac Mini.

We may also see our first previews of what is coming in OS X 10.7 "Lion" We may also see touch capabilities announced for OS X- probably brought "up" from iOS. That could happen as an add on to OS 10.6 or as a feature of 10.7

On the outside we may get USB3 or FW1600/3200. Apple would probably sell any movement on these buses as a way to get more out of existing USB and FW devices, but really a dead end.

My man no disrespect but you are a dreamer. it is not a sin to be one but wow. How do you feel after the announcement? The only thing I see you got right was the Lion . Lets face it people. we are not profitable anymore. in the other hand the iToys are by the loads. I am blaming apple kust because they are the opposite of RED the tell you nothing. well almost nothing because Stevo said "it will be awesome" but that I could have said.
anyways long story short. apple will not give us the things you mention all at once although he should because apple is way behind hardware and software wise. IMHO I think we will not see lightpeak in about 2-4 years. the rest maybe in 2 years.

How is windows as a Workstation?

I have to ask. and I have wondered myself, would I have all those problems people Bi#$#h about with windows if I only use it as what is is A workstation and only connect it to the internet for updates. I used to build Pcs and yes it is rewarding. with current hardware avialable to widows I could put together a fierce competitor to any Mac Pro. what do you say Prince? is it worth it? how are the bugs and viruses treating you? one more thing could you produce (from ingest to finish product) on a Linux Base PC?.

Disapointing Keynote... No "Mac Pro Mini" (or whatever they would have named a light version of the Mac Pro or just a modulable version of a desktop comuter like they did with de G4 Cube)...
Anyway... The new Macbook Air, even if I'll probably never buy one, is quite an amazing and interesting product.

Bastien, no offense but your setting of text display makes my eyes go crazy, I guess it must be working on your computer but in my normal browser setting, all of the texts look blurred and hard to read, I want to read them, so can you post normal please?

Hell noooooo

Hell noooooo

The future of any editing app will be the ability to author for iPad and mobile devices.
I wish Apple would buy Adobe instead of Microsoft....
What I really need is After Motion.

and here is why: apple recently, well for the last 3-4 years has neglected and miss treated us with lame updates. I would not want to wait 3-4 years for CS6.
as we speak Dave in these forums has mentioned that they are already hard at work on CS6. I remember Steve calling Adobe Lazy. so the must ask question is. Who is the lazy one NOW?

it was not intended for the PRO user

it was not intended for the PRO user

No, I just have a low patience for ridiculous corporate masturbation. :tongue_smilie:

And this presentation was a doosie even by Apple standards.

this event was not intended for the Pro user. even though it implied a little that it was. for me "Bac to the Mac" means we will not talk iToys just Computers and pro stuff. I was wrong was not I?

My man no disrespect but you are a dreamer. it is not a sin to be one but wow. How do you feel after the announcement?

Not so bad. Pretty good in fact.

The only thing I see you got right was the Lion .

Oh you just aren't stretching. Most of what I wrote was very close.

We did get a new Mac model, two in fact the new MacBook Airs.

We did get processor speed bumps and other minor updates. I talked about the Mac Pro, but we got them instead on the MacBook Pro. (Which now has a 2.8GHz Core i7)

I didn't really expect Lightpeak, but I'll come back to this.

As to the lack of the mid-range macintosh computer... its an intentional strategy on their part for reasons I can not understand.

I say it as often as practical in all the forums where I can: This mid-range Mac is a game winner for Apple.

Lets face it people. we are not profitable anymore. ...

If you think that 33% of the revenues of a company the size of Apple is anything to sneeze at... then you are mistaken.

Also, remember that iOS is built on OS X... as iOS features get taken back to the Mac there will be an ever quickening feedback loop.

Also remember that in 5 years an iPad will be as fast as a low end Mac Pro is today.

IMHO I think we will not see lightpeak in about 2-4 years. the rest maybe in 2 years.

I disagree, and the lack of USB 3 and Firewire 1600/3200 is the best indicator. Neither Intel nor Apple are pushing USB or FW technology because they now see them as dead ends... to be made obsolete the instant LightPeak arrives.

Intel fully expected to ship LightPeak to the market in the first quarter of 2011... and so they didn't even bother to upgrade their chipsets for USB 3 support, something fairly trivial.

In order to meet that goal, Intel has to ship sample LightPeak parts to its customers (Apple, Dell HP, IBM etc) basically right now. Well... that happened already, and device developers showed working devices already at the 2010 Intel Developer Forum

http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/14/intels-light-peak-optical-interconnect-shrinks-slightly-while/

I think Apple may well announce a product in the first quarter that uses it, and I expect Avid, Western Digital and Lacie will join them.

In the short term, think what a PCIe to LightPeak bridge would mean when coupled with and external PCIe enclosure. Longer term... imagine those i/o cards that require a PCIe slot today being rackmounted hardware connected vie LightPeak. Exciting times for us... and Apple gets to keep making its pretty computers for consumers without sacrificing expandability for us.

Which indicates to me that CS6 is just an incremental upgrade with an integer name when it is probably just CS5.2 or whatever.

Adobe needs the constant upgrade stream for cash flow. Apple is currently flush with cash so isn't desperate to introduce a tweener FCS upgrade and can wait for the Major rewrite they have been working on - unless the level of whining reaches a point where they feel they have to release another incremental update.

There are only a few thousand RED1s period, and just a percentage of that are FCS users - so a trivial number compared to the overall installed base for FCS. The truth is FCS currently has more capability than the vast majority of owners can use - it's a pretty solid product as-is so upgrades can wait awhile until a major advance is ready.

I have to say that FCS really is a solid product and for most mortals it is almost spot on. For those who are on the cutting edge (pun intended), nothing will suffice. But then again, these editors push Apple to improve their software and in the end we all benefit.

And anyhow, this is a never ending circle. Today Adobe is ahead, then Avid release their new stuff with bells and whistles, and eventually Apple will unleash theirs. And then we will get the usual posts where people are migrating to FCS because it is much better then.....

"Getting it Very close" is not Getting it Right

Well getting is almost right or close it is not the same as getting it right. Big difference.
so here are the things you said you expected:
Lightpeak. Wrong
Mid-Range Mac. Wrong
Mac pro with more PCIe Slots. Wrong
Mac Pro with or more selection of Video Cards. Wrong
iMac Updates. Wrong
Mac Mini updates. Wrong
Express Card Slot for iMac. Wrong
Express Card Slot for Mac Mini. Wrong
Firewire 1600. Wrong
Firewire 3200. Wrong
USB3.0. Wrong.
I Stand by what I said before. you got most of it Wrong. sad you do not admit it. Must be a mac fanatic.
although you have educated me on regards to lightpeak. I was not aware of how advanced it is in terms of readiness. I sure hope you are right and we get it soon. but I wonder how soon would we be able to take advantage of it. to do so Red, Sony, Panasonic, AJA, Black Magic and others would have to implement it now. I do not particularly care if WD or Lacie have prototypes. for pro work groups you must use a SAN. plus they said none of those have a chance of being a reality.
