  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple Thunderbolt Display

If you're using a multi-touch trackpad, the "natural" default scroll direction is better, IMO. Yeah, it takes a bit of rethinking for a day or so. But now scrolling follows your finger direction just as it does on your iPhone/iPad, etc.. I still prefer the "old" way if I'm rolling a mouse wheel.

Navigating Lion with Mission Control and all the gesture controls for Expose', etc.. is great. I'm thinking most of the negative comments are coming from people trying to use the new features without a magic mouse or multi-touch pad... Because on my one Mac Pro where I've got Lion on a partition and no multitouch devices, it kinda sucks. Or at least the new Launchpad, and Mission Control kinda do unless you have a multi-touch control. ;) My primary Mac Pro will remain 10.6.8 only for some time. Just got it all working with the PCIe expander and all under 10.6.8, still some Lion issues with several of my apps.. So... But I've moved to Lion as the only OS on my 15" MBP and on my iMac I share with the family. The kids are disinterested in the computer anyway -- they just want to play with the iPads. I'm always tracking the iPads down somewhere in the house so I can load new builds of what I'm working on. I usually have to clean all the grease and food and whatnot off of them too...

No Esata, no USB3.0, no 10-bit colors, no 4K, no 3D... exactly what other then thunderbolt is good about this? Also if it's glossy it's even worse.
I'm not so sure who this display is for, consumers buy their laptops and Ipads, but this together with a 49 dollar cable isn't gonna make consumers happy.
Spend a little more and you can get a dreamcolor display from HP.

Haha - I think some folks just don't like Apple. 3D, really? 4K would be nice but for $999? I suppose you could pay two and a half times as much ("a little more"??) and get a Dreamcolor - with USB 2.0, 1920 x 1080, no eSATA and, uh, no Thunderbolt.

Applle could give away a free Ferrari with every display and some folks would complain because you could only get it in red.

Exactly. No one is saying it's revolutionary or the best thing ever, but it's a pretty solid value at $997.

One thing that seems to be happening is that as Apple has grown, their prices have come to a place where they are often somewhat competitive with similar spec'd PC products.
I'm not saying all products, but many are now competitively priced, which was never the case before.

This makes me hope and believe Apple could be the first company to offer an affordable 4k display -- unfortunately, it probably still won't be "pro" enough in some way ;)

Apple has never manufactured display panels. My bet is LG coming up with the first affordable 4K panel, and of course, Apple will use it in their future TB Display at some point.

Dell U2711 is outstanding value for well under $900 now. Unlike the old Cinema Display, however, the new TB Display does have it's USP - Thunderbolt. Unfortunately, I do hope the rumours about the TB Display featuring the same panel are false, because on a purely display level, the Dell U2711 is just, better - objectively. What's more, it's about to be refreshed. Also, if you like glossy displays, then the TB Display is a solid choice and definitely the best glossy display in this price range. I abhor glossy displays myself, though. The Dell also has a nice touch which I appreciate - the stand - it is endlessly adjustable. Let's not bring in Dreamcolor into this discussion, however, it is a different market segment.

Asking for 10-bit, 3D and 4K at $999 in 2011 is a bit ridiculous though.
