  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple push to win back pro editors

+1 for Terry

I did 1,400 web content videos this past year as a DIT/Editor. It ain't as glamorous as hollywood and I don't get mentioned on IMDB, but I work for the number one food App on IoS. Millions of views, per month!

Wow, Brian. That's pretty cool. You are a very busy guy.

That's a very productive year Brian! Good job.

i liek chatting on here sometimes, to take a break, but I am doing work very happily on Avid and Premiere, no issues. I don;t feel the need to be part of a construction crew for tools not at all suited to what I do and how I do it . I have better ways to spend my time than joining some "FCPX "crew".

Good for you. You are amazing!

Coming from the debate when FCPX was released, that the "fixes" will be just around the corner. Well, it's been a while now and I'm surprised the same thing still continues... the debate, the discussion.
How any serious editor would still try to hold on to FCP at this time is beyond me. Why? There are so much better tools and tools that gives you much more flexibility then FCPX, both for single editor mode and collaboration between offices and for large post facilities.

Just rest in piece, use Avid, use Premiere, they are better, I really don't think anyone seriously can argue with that.

My workflow is a duality mode between Premiere and Avid, I use both for different jobs or together for offline/online. It's wonderful to use both instead of choosing. I can use my own system, I can manage everything for my type of work. It's a freedom that FCP and FCPX doesn't give me... and I can work with others, I get work because my workflow is smooth, without problems.
That's important.

I switched from Final Cut Pro 7 to Premiere right after the Pro X launch. I recently tried Final Cut Pro X and I like it. It's innovative and new thinking. I probably won't switch over right now, Creative Cloud is a fantastic and affordable solution, but in the future I actually see myself editing some smaller projects on it. The speed of the software is really amazing!

It seems like redundant debates around FCPx usability are often between creative people with different requirements.
As in many similar cases.

Attempting to define and point out the requirements and principles completely ignored by the tool maker, to appeal to a wider customer base,
seems to cause hurt feelings and defensiveness with users perceiving their tool of choice being attacked or their line of creative work being undervalued.

In order to avoid running around in circles for the Nth time since FCPx introduction, some factors might be taken into consideration:

- oversimplification and generalization
- assumption that one product designed for and using principles from one market segment, can properly cater other market segments
- assumption that corporative entity with stockholders "cares" for the benefit of minute portion of its income providers, knows what's best and must be right
- accepting marketing & PR over experienced user base input, needlessly creating "opposing" sides
- assumption that every "easier" route = "better"
- label "pro" and confusion it tends to cause due to subjective parameters, leading to discrepancies in perception of a tool with obviously switched or "moved" or "expanded" target market

Yes, Mr. Glans - "...rest in piece." Heck, rest in several pieces. I am happy with FCP-X just like you are with Avid, etc. For me, it's better. Seriously!

So... why on Earth are you even looking at this thread? You've got it all figured out. There's simply no reason to even bother with the the Apple Workflow forum. Just let us retards who like it stumble around in the dark. Please pay no attention to us. We don't know what we're doing. I'm going to go in the back now and give myself 100 lashes for using such an unprofessional program and workflow. Someday, I look forward to seeing the light!

I find it remarkably interesting that there aren't many people who jump over to the Avid or Premiere workflow forums to tell everyone why their workflow is so stupid. I look forward to the day when people talk more about the actual work being done than they do about which tools they're using to do it. Premiere and Avid are great programs, and people will continue to use them. FCPX is great too. People will continue to use it. Honestly, I'm sort of mad at myself for getting baited into even replying at all to this. I'm going to go back to work now using all of my broken software that can't possibly be used to make anything cool.

i didn't mean it that way. I just thought it was ridiculous to expect people to join some "crew"or "team" braving new paths with new software, the wind at their backs. I could give a rat's ass about supporting Apple. I just use what is fast and easy and does what I need it to do the way I want it to at a good price. FCPX does not suit my style of production at all, so why would I bother being part of some group-hug FCPX spirit or whatever.

What did this actually bring to the discussion? Some think FCPX is fast easy and at the right price, so let them group hug over it. I for one, adapt my gear and software after my projects. Locking yourself into an editing suite just for the sake of it is stupid.

This is kind of an ironic quote on reduser.... As i think all of us are here cause we joined a "team" or "Crew" braving new paths with camera technology... hahaha just saying If you hate it, go back to using what you want to use. stop posting negative stuff about a piece of tech that clearly is of no interest to you... I mean do you complain about how ineffective tampons are to you on some women-r-us forum?

Zowie... damn

I'm not "dis-sing" the software here just trying to get a handle on where it is at.

The weak link for me is FCPX ability to interface with outside "post houses" and other software systems etc.

So a few questions to current users of FCPX ............How are you successfully negotiating FCPX thru the "post Pipe" . Are there certain strategies for doing so ? For instance ..... how does FCPX interface with Pro Tools? What is the recommended pathway from FCPX to D.I ?

I'm attracted to the ProRes4K codec and the speed I keep hearing about. But if its still "little orphan X-ee", then it's essentially QTPro for $300 or only appropriate for one stop post scenarios which is pretty limiting. Neil W Smith at Lumaforge is threatening to prove FCPX is actually a viable tool as of version 10.0.8 at his class on the 27th - I'll be in the front row with a positive attitude and an open mind...

Cheers - #19

as far as FCPX being used with outside programs, i believe it's the same as anything else, Pro Tools editors usually want a .OMF audio file to work with along with a .mov final picture cut for most projects. To the Digital Intermediate, on RED you want it to be raw, so as long as your coloring system can handle that either take an .EDL or the .r3d's themselves to adjust the metadata. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this strategy...

Ok, Real World in a professional environment experience report:

Right now, I'm editing an internationally broadcasted TVC. I've decided to try and do it in FCP X because of Prores 4K and because I had a terrible experience last time with Premiere, which crashed and at the same time corrupted my portable HDD which had the entire project in it- god bless Disk Warrior. I could as well do it in FCP7 but then one has to move forward and not stay on a dead platform. I'm the director of the TVC and am doing an offline edit of the piece. FInal Grading , Online editing will be done by a post house, so I feel somehow safe, and the problem will need to be solved by the post house.

This tvc is based on a longer edited piece I directed a while ago and edited it in FCPX, my first "serious edit" on the software. The logical solution would be to copy the sequence and paste it in a new one, and trim and work from it, right? Turns out that in the new Final Cut, simple trims become a nightmare, at least for me.

Maybe its my lack of knowledge of the software, but the lack of tracks, which creates the "tetris effect"- piles and piles of clips placed in " stairstep" in order to prevail some sort of transparency and mask order -creates an organization hell. Add to that the incomprehensible auto "black shadow of pain", which basically is a black shadow on the timeline that final cut X creates the moment you add a transition to a clip, trying to somehow "group" the clip with the transition, which makes basic clip selection with the position tool requiring one to INDIVIDUALLY command click each shadow to be able to move a group of clips, is, to say the least, counter intuitive and takes both time and patience from the editor.

Since I don't have tracks I have to be constantly looking on the timeline up or down my "staircase" to search for the clip I'm looking for, be it an animation, graphic or video. Terrible.

But it has one thing going for it. Its solid. Never crashed, fast, reliable. Something I can't say from my Premiere experience. And I love prores, and being able to work with prores 4K natively in an editor with such a powerful engine makes it hard to look to others.

I think the post house is going to go through hell to pull out the EDL or the XML from this project, but its a challenge we are both willing to accept.

I am not convinced about FCPX as the tool that makes me edit more creatively and hassle free. So I'll be looking to CS7 to see if its more stable and can accomodate my workflow better.

FCPX has an incredible "engine" behind it but by going automatic transmission in the most crucial and precise things like timeline and clip organization on it, it just makes everything slower and, following with this analogy, "less drivable". I can accept auto effects, the hit or miss match colour and the gimmicky effects, but having to struggle my way to stacks of shots and the hassle of moving around the "storyline" just pulls me away from it. Either there's a rewrite or rethink of this or I'll continue looking for alternatives.

Any nice words for Smoke 2013? Sounds like a great deal...

Premiere has made great strides in terms of stability, and also handles 4K and even 5K prores in real time on a 12 core system, as well as 5K and 4K Redcode.

As for Smoke, I invested much time learning it, and for finishing it is AWESOME, for editing a joke.

Actually I am mad at Apple because I loved FCP7, and wanted that legacy, and my work habits, memorized keyboard shortcuts, and all the other thing s that become second nature to continue with better tech under the hood. Maybe they read these forums, maybe it will have some effect.

The metaphor was more like this, some people are constructive (positive), see the potential of something and are wiling to grow with it (like when red came out and many people shat on it, but five years later, while it is not the only tool used it has a solid market position in a wide range of genres). Some people are destructive (negative) because the thing does not conform to something that exists or does not live up to some expectations. (Some Film guys stuck with film when the RED one came out, some shat all over it, some went out of their way to bash and resist RED, it's products, it's customers and all that they stand for).

I used version .o9 of Avid, I've used just about every NLE you can think of going back to Editdroid from Lucas, which predates avid.

I liked it when fcp 1.0 came out and for less than 1% of the price of and avid at the time, I could build my own system. We're there growing pains? yes there were, but I made sure I sent feedback and help grow the product into what was eventually fcp7.

The reason FCP X polarizes people is because it is disruptive technology. They moved in an entirely new direction, based on where they see the market going. Hollywood might be a "certain kind" of PRO market, but it is not a growing/expanding market. Already in this thread we read about people smashing through high volume (call it factory work) with excellent speed and results in the new real world editing markets.

But, FCP x a departure from a traditional NLE and it is not for everybody, I get that. Keywords and metadata might not matter to feature film editors (although I doubt that).

Personally, I choose to roll with it because I refuse to be intimidated by new things, or judge them after, "playing around". To me, this NLE will far exceed (and already has exceeded) FCP 7 which not long ago, everyone and their sister was using in every major market segment , and it might, within a few upgrades and a new mac tower, blow the shit out of anything in the marketplace.

It might not either.

I like it, I use it. I don't shit on anyone for using AVID or Premiere or what ever gets you to the finish line, but generally people can't accept this software and somehow feel betrayed enough to attack (the way the early red naysayers attacked RED) the software and anyone using it.

So every time a discussion comes up about this software someone enters the room to have a shit on people having a discussion.

i think Steve was right, maybe a new clean thread could be started where the discussion revolves around something besides, "this versus that", which turns into senseless cock swinging.
