APPLE discontinues XSERVE

Probably Apple will buy Oracle soon that already bought SUN Computers.

Big Fish Eat Little Fish....

In that case Apple doesn't need Xserve anymore.

Why buy Oracle to get Sun?

Oracle has a market cap of about $150B, and Sun was acquired for $7.5B, and Apple only has about $50B in the bank.

Apple does not need to be in the enterprise server market, other people do that well enough.

WSJ: Oracle CEO likens new approach to Apple’s >>>

During this week’s conference, Oracle featured examples of its high-end hardware loaded with tailored software,

including a new version of its Exadata machine, designed to quickly crunch massive amounts of data.

Apple, too, has emphasized the virtues of carefully wrapping software with hardware,

in popular products such as the iPhone and iPad tablet devices.

Oracle’s new emphasis on complete systems is “a little bit like the iPhone,” Ellison said.

Jobs, Ellison added, is “my best friend, I love him dearly, and he’s someone I watch very closely.”

R.I.P. XServe... Unfortunately, no one will miss you.

Sales were light in '09, this year they have been practically nil. Other than exceptional build quality, mostly of the 1U case itself, the XServe really had nothing to offer. It went well beyond the "Apple Tax" and was just downright overpriced. OSX is a decent server OS, but offers nothing over Linux or Solaris. XSan is a joke and if you're not running Solaris or Linux, then you're looking at Windows for .NET platform integration. Meanwhile, Apple can't even give us an iTunes server or multi-user media libraries, let alone any business-class server software solutions to even entice us to buy an Apple Server product. Mac Mini Sever --- gimme a break! And Final Cut Server? Not a bad idea, but their implementation sucks and the product felt DOA when I first took it for a test drive.

For general installation of Windows / Linux 1U systems, SuperMicro makes some great products. I've been a fan for years.
