  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Apple attending NAB. Hardware/Software & FCS 4.

I switched 10 years ago from Avid to FCP, and it might be time for another switch. I left Premiere behind around version 5, which had more bugs than an alleycat.

But being betatesting too, I have to say I'm nothing short of impressed. BTW, this was on a Mac Pro with the Quadro FX 4800 inside, and I was smoothly testing Mac and PC versions side-by-side. I might switch too and keep FCS just for Color. Smooth workflow there too, either with DPX-series rendered out of Premiere and an EDL, or via Clipfinder. H.G. Daun is already working on the latter one.

Apple, you better impress me now or I'm ready to leave!

I just ordered the fastest!

avid and adobe are coming out with products this year that completely change what they had to offer before. to say they are just offering a little bit more is to understate it. Avid is offering the biggest amount of compatibility and direct to edit configuration anybody has ever seen. Direct pro res and MOV support, and r3d via AMA is HUGE for Avid. Everybody has always complained that they were too slow to update and don't listen to what people want in a NLE, they've answered 90% of people's outcries that want to stay on their Avid systems and not have to go FCP/PP route simply for a better workflow.

Cuda and Mercury Playback is only the beginning in my opinion for Adobe. you'll see GPU acceleration in all their software soon enough, and video cards are only gonna get better, they come out faster than CPU's. and much easier to upgrade. PCI-X doesn't get replaced very often, so a simple GPU upgrade will be easier and provide better results at a better cost. The next GEN cpu can sometimes require you to replace a whole motherboard. The fact that Avid and PP are multi platform from mac to pc also is also a big plus. Broadcast especially is a lot of PC based systems too, cause they want cheap and fast. Macs are beyond the budget for a lot of post houses believe it or not, especially ones dedicated to reality TV, which generates a lot of money, for very low budgets. Cost efficiency is gonna be a big factor too.

As for FCP, if this is going to be an update on it, it's going to need a few factors to make it big news. 64 bit of course as everybody has been wanting and yelling for, probably Blu Ray support in DVD Studio Pro at least. Possibly another color update. and probably better integration of codecs. (Maybe direct r3d support, no transcoding?)

There were rumors awhile back that they were gonna integrate all their pro app software into one single unified software... who knows. But i think 64 bit, better media management, and a few tweaks and updates to their PRO Apps are gonna keep FCP in the game and keep a lot of FCP users happy. Anything less and I think it's gonna be a disappointment.

Store back up. New range is on there. Nothing monumental. 512gb SSDs will be nice.

What about the higher resolution display for the 15 inch? That was a massive thing for me - I really liked the screen on the 17 inches as it was much higher res than the 15 inch ones, but I didn't want a laptop as big and as expensive as the 17 inch one.

Still wishing this thing had eSata onboard though, since the 15 inch doesn't have ExpressCard...

I think this is extremely unlikely. Perhaps Color could be integrated into Final Cut but for all the other apps, I think that having them separate but with good interoperation would be best, as just having one mega-app would be far more resource intensive and would take a lot longer to start up.

hasn't it been kind of concluded that the latest MCP's, apple kind of took the "pro" out of the 15 inch model? 17 inch is really annoying for mobility, and expresscard slot was what made the 15 inch model so perfect...

i would love to see a 14.1 inch to 15 inch model with... LED display (i mean they freakin have it on a IPAD), express card back, 2 fw800 independant bus, 1 esata, usb 3.0.

hard drive and ram i'd buy out of the box cheapest and replace myself, Apple over charges for their hard drives and ram.

New Mac Book Pro didn't come with the USB3.

All Apple computers have LED backlit displays. As far as I can remember, the Macbook Pros have had them since they went to the new Unibody case, which was either late 2008 or mid-2009.

As for the other things - really, I think that as long as you had one FW800 and one eSata port then an ExpressCard slot wouldn't really be needed. USB3 would be good but it's not anywhere near as big a deal as eSata would be for me.

...But I can't find any mention of 3. In fact internally/externally
it is refferred to as Final Cut Studio (2009)...

Weird huh.

But please don't call it Final Cut Studio 3... cause no-where on
Apple's site do they call it that...

Good call. Checked my FCS box and sure enough there's no '3' on there. I guess since it came after FCS 2 everyone just assumed.

Looking through the comments on that Apple event post I found an Apple rumors blog I'm sure y'all know about - macsoda.com
Seems more credible and varied than the PressReleaseRegurgitators - appleinsider, tuaw, macrumors et al. Plus they seem to be getting the ocassional email direct from Steve Jobs :)

I noticed it as well (on packaging and website)
just curious ... what does it say on the install disks ?

I have a Macbook Pro, bought in februari 2008, just before a new release, so my generation is from somewhere in 2007, and even THEN the 15" came standard with a LED display.

Looks like managing heavy data loads on a MBP is going to remain a headache. As discussed in another thread, high level DIT work will continue to mean MacPro towers with eSATA HBAs at the minimum.

Best solution I have seen for leveraging the MBP for set work is Maxx Digital's mobile Rocket box which has a PCI-e slot for an eSATA HBA. Of course this is another expense, another box to carry, requires a MBP with Express/34 and has the same footprint as the 17" only thicker. It's a great bit of technology, but if portability and low cost are your primary concerns...

Just picked up this quote from Steve Jobs from Macsoda:

FCP user wrote Jobs the following:
Steve,

Getting worried about Apple’s interest in Final Cut. Last updates were not stellar. I heard a bunch of engineers were dropped too – give us a sign you still care about Pro Video, not just the iPad.

Thanks,

Alex

Steve replied:
We certainly do. Folks who left were in support, not engineering. Next release will be awesome.

As spurious as taking fourth-hand CEO quotes from a rumour website may be - these are the miniscule fricking bones we have to hold on to at the moment.

While the quote could be fabricated, Jobs has made a habit of replying to e-mail like that lately.

Look, all we know for sure is that the current FCP looks a little neglected. But that doesn't really tell us anything. By deprecating Carbon, Apple backed themselves into a corner: they have to do a major Final Cut rewrite now if they want to keep it on the market. So one way or another, the current FCP is EOL. That's dead certain. The only question is whether they're replacing it with something else, or exiting the market.

Personally, I think the notion that Apple would walk away from what is now the most popular pro video editing software in the world is ludicrous. Of course they're replacing it. The only question is where they are in the development cycle, which nobody willing to speak in public seems to have any clue about. Release could be 18 months away, or it could be six weeks away.

Anyone who thinks Apple would hand over the editing marketshare to Adobe for premiere by ending Final Cut is not paying attention to how Apple manages Adobe issues in other categories. Apple would rather risk an anti-competitive practice lawsuit than let Adobe have a little bit of it's market share. They're not going to then say "Ah... but over here, we've spent 10 years building up the number one brand name in editing.... why don't you guys take over the market share now." If anything, they're going to ramp up the competition. I'm surprised we've never seen a Photoshop from Apple. I wonder if there is some hidden written agreement about that somewhere that was signed so that in a weak moment in the past Adobe required it to keep making products for the Mac.

I think competing against Photoshop might have been a little out of their league (for now) adobe has and owns that market, 20+ years of photoshop development. Aperture i think was more a competition against lightroom, with a few small photoshop esk options. Motion didn't really steal anybody away from after effects, Soundtrack pro I don't really think took anybody away that already had a pro tools set up...

i honestly think FCP and Color were their most successful apps, and were really the things that sold the most mac pros. If it means it's gonna sell more hardware, they will develop more software. It's guaranteed. But as long as I-phone, touch, pad, and what not generate the most money from the masses, spotlight is gonna be on those items for now. Their pro-application/hardware stuff usually sleeper hits... I didn't even know FCS 3 was out until weeks after it released, it just kind of snuck itself in...
