I'm in the market for a red epic dragon. Is there anything I should know before purchasing? E.g. are there versions / serials / years I should avoid, do they all make use of the olpfs etc.?

I have been shooting RED for years and following the company since early 2009. I am not aware of any particular issues with any series of cameras, etc. I have a Scarlet Dragon and love it. The Epic is that much better.

I would take the time ti study the market and gather information on best practices for shooting RED. It's not like any other camera out there and, if you work at it, you'll get the best images imaginable - just ask guys like Phil Holland, Chris McKechnie and Mark Toia, just to name a couple.

As an original/DSMC1 camera, just be aware that some DSMC2 accessories won't be compatible; and the OLPFs are different (but all DSMC1 OLPFs will work). I can't stress enough how helpful it is to immerse yourself in an education about the camera and its operation. You won't regret it.

Have fun!!
