  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone wish that Apple would just come out and...

publicly state whether or not they were killing the mac pro?

with all of the financial success in their iOS devices, you'd think that they might show some respect the professional community with some information that would allow (those of us waiting on new machines) to make an informed decision on our future workstations..

after all.. if we, the professional community, constitute such a small percentage of their profit margins... why not just be upfront and honest with us?...

"guys... we don't make enough money to produce a professional machine anymore."

"you know what?... Jon Ivey doesn't like the aesthetic design of the tower... so we're getting rid of it."

"we just don't care about real users anymore... we want everyone surfing the internet (without flash enabled) from their couch... in their underwear... on ipads."

Why don't you do what most professionals that I know of did, and just switch to Windows 7. Embrase it, Love it, its kick ass, its fast, its reliable. It blows me away how many people do just what your doing and hanging on and hope that Apple wakes up. But really? would you really buy the next Mac Pro just to have to wait on the next go around? Apple has shown us that they just don't care. Their silence at this point is just sheer disrespect. The only people hanging on and waiting are people that are just irrational and can not see clearly what has happened. I'm writing this on a Mac...I love them. But, when its time to work PC is the way to go.

i'm also writing this on a mac, and i hate to say it but he's right... this isn't a windows vs. osx thing, it's irrational and unprofessional to wait around when there's work to be done. if they do finally (pure speculation) come out with something more powerful than anything available (because let's face it, it's not going to be more cost-efficient), you know what your next upgrade will be.

They said they would come with a redesigned and fantastic new Mac Pro this year. A year has 365 days. Never heard them promise anything for q1. I give them time since I've never been disappointed with their hardware (bare a liquid cooling failure of a G5).

What happens when everything switches over to Windows 8. That doesn't look too exciting to me. Feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard spot. Perhaps Linux is the answer?

They have already, this is from Tim Cook last year...
"Thanks for your email. Our Pro customers like you are really important to us. Although we didn't have a chance to talk about a new Mac Pro at today's event, don't worry as we're working on something really great for later next year. We also updated the current model today."

Maybe it'll come during WWDC maybe it'll only be talked about and released later on, who knows but "this year" still isn't over yet.

Perhaps Linux is the answer?

I think I'll go out on a limb on that one and say; No it's not.

Yup thats what i did and couldnt be happier.

Vote with your wallet and move on.

I too have switched to w8 with a custom built editing system for my red workflow. Apple no longer cater to the prossionals and their secrecy is hurting their loyal customers. Still using a macbook pro and imac for everything else though.

If Apple has a problem it's not the secrecy, it's the 3 years it's been since a significant update for the mac pro, if Apple had continued with the 1 year update cycle I doubt there would be as much annoyance towards Apple as there is now.

... if Apple had continued with the 1 year update cycle I doubt there would be as much annoyance towards Apple as there is now.

So some folks dislike Canon because they come out with a new camera every year, but dislike Apple because they don't come out with a new computer every year? These same folks are users of Red cameras... Massive computes in little boxes? Individually I understand the reasons for each of these ideas, but am I the only one who is confused by the inherent contradiction?

I am OK upgrading to a new computer every 3 years or so. In that time frame I generally begin to get a sense of sluggishness and wish for something faster. When each year brings a faster machine, I always feel a bit behind, and my investment devalues faster.

There needs to be a middle ground... A balance point between speed/power and value. Again, 3-5 is good for me.

I think I find that the people in the professional market who complain most about Apple not telling us what they are going to do next, happen to be RedUsers.

I think we all get spoiled here with Jim, Jarred, and the rest of the RED crew just telling us what they're doing and when they're going to do it. And then, most of the time they are late.. and by late I don't mean by days, but most of the time months. For some reason thats ok though because we know that something is coming and we get excited for it only to be delayed. Apple is the complete opposite. They don't tell anybody that they are working on something so that when they are late, or when they can't deliver on a promise, they don't let down everybody. Its different because the markets are different.

Trust me, something great will come from Apple this year, it will go into the same yearly refresh rate that there was before. They had some hic-ups, much like RED did with their cameras when they were upgrading, much like they are having now with the Drago color science. Much like most companies have who develop new products. Do not worry, Apple will have something for us this year. It will be exciting, it will be new, and it will be powerful, and even though I'm sure it will go into refresh yearly, i'm sure the first generation will be enough for most of us for quite a long time.

sorry for the late night ramble... but... i had a few drinks, and having read through the entire Apple "push to win back Pro editors" thread... i'd reached the boiling point of frustration..

our entire organization is based on the apple os... video editing is only a part of what we do... the functionality of OSX is amazing for our work environment... we have pc's.. for writing and testing code out on... but... for the collaborative infrastructure that we exist in... it's osx based...

For security reasons, we've been off windows since the late 90's... and while cyber attacks on the mac os are more prevalent, they pale in comparison to what we see in the windows world..

We can exist in a windows world... but... for my sanity... i REALLY want to stay with osX...

I also update my desktop about every 3-4 years, usually dropping in a laptop replacement on an alternating schedule. I don't tend to edit on my laptop and only use them for admin stuff so I usually keep those a bit longer. I have a 2010 Mac Pro and it continues to serve me well though I suspect I'll jump on a new machine not too long after it drops. That schedule seems good for me assuming the new Mac Pro leaps forward to being state-of-the-art, which is what I expect. I do believe Apple not only values pro users but also wants to impress them. I don't think you'll see them bring a ho-hum machine.

I guess I have just learned to match my rhythm to Apple's (and RED's). Life is good!

My Macs at home and work still work.

Some date as far back as 2006.

We stocked up on MacPros so we never run out ;)

My Mac Pro just died last week ...for good, terminal. I was hoping to get another 6 months or so out of it to tied me over. Cant complain though lasted 5 years with the occasional HD replacement.

Anyway I went I mac, already have a Mac book pro. My feeling if they deliver on a new Mac Pro I will get one next year. Now I'm trying to decide what to do with a Mac Pro case?
