Let's make a group buy

Britain's Ministry of Defense (MoD) has put the Royal Navy's former flagship aircraft carrier, the HMS Ark Royal, up for sale on an official used equipment website, eDisposals.

How do you become a millionaire?

Start with a billion and buy one of these...

Jim

Uh yeah, swimming RED headquarters, always on international waters, no taxes...
Then you just set a course to Japan when parts are needed and then back home to Fiji.
(Cuba every now and then to stock up on supplies!)

That's the number for yearly maintenance...

Jim

I've always wondered if the more money one had the fewer things they would want to buy because as the price increases, so does the maintenance, security risk and depreciation potential. Sounds like Jim has solved the riddle for me. :)

Ha, guess I'm going to avoid buying even a cruise liner anytime soon,

I'm pretty sure PirateBay wanted one of these, right after their idea flopped of having the piratebay servers in out of space...

A casualty of the UK's recent defence review I'm afraid. Not enough cash floating around (excuse the pun). India was one rumoured potential buyer, having previously bought an ex British carrier.

The ski-jump carrier + Harrier concept served the RN very well for many years, in the absence of larger conventional carriers. One of the baffling decisions from the Strategic Defence Review was their sudden scrapping, along with the Harriers, years before their replacements are due to enter service. Although those planned replacements will be larger and more capable conventional carriers with catapult launched fighters (JSF F35 Carrier Variant) there will be at least a ten + year capability gap. Not to mention the loss of the UK's VSTOL capabilty.......hard to take for the country that developed the Harrier.

Don't worry -I'm sure our Conservative government will overpay for it and then get screwed on the maintenance contract...like we did with the subs from the Royal Navy a couple years back (they didn't actually have to work, right?)

Of course it's beyond the realm of reality... But if I had the financial and technological means, I would disassemble it into small enough pieces so that it could be launched to the moon. I would then reassemble it there... Just because. Probably in the Sea of Tranquility, on an infinite voyage.

Another possibility would be to park it in the desert, just outside of Pahrump, Nevada and turn it into a brothel.

Anyway, I can just imagine the uninspired proposals they're actually getting... Mooring it near London as a helipad? Sinking it for an artificial reef? Come on, let's try something new... Let's make it into a summit house lodge at a fine ski area in the Alps or something. ...Set it adrift in the Gulf of Aden and see how long it takes the Somali (and other) pirates to discover and board it. Take bets on how many pirate gangs will fight over it and how many unsavory souls will pile on board the vessel before it's remotely detonated and sent to Poseidon's doorstep. Evil? Yes. I know.

Love your Gulf of Aden plan Jeff :).

Up for sale because they decided to build two proper aircraft carriers:

Unfortunately, as someone has pointed out, they put the old carriers up for sale ten years before the new ones will be in service. Go figure.

I'm not impressed with the names for the new vessels; 'Queen Elizabeth' and 'Prince of Wales'. I mean... what if they get sunk? One day they'll be scrap metal. There's a reason no German battleship was ever named the 'Hitler' and it wasn't modesty...

What's wrong with good old traditional British carrier names? Ark Royal, Victorious, Implacable, Terrible, Eagle?
