We're looking with interest at the whole Iridas workflow, from Onset to XR and they seem to have a lot going for them but... The user group seems to be very quiet or non-existent which makes me nervous.

Anyone on these boards using, or know of anyone using, Speedgrade of any description?

I really want to believe in these guys so if anyone has advice either way, please chime in.

Hi Bettsy,

we use SpeedGradeDI over here, regularly with RED ONE footage we shoot or which customers brought us.

In fact the workflow was realtime for Build 15- footage. Since the codec change in Build 16 we have to rely on the RGB deBayer via REDs own software until they open up the native RAW path officially. If you aim at running realtime RAW workflows in the long run, Iridas is clearly the way to go, no other app has a track record like this on RAW processing.

Unfortunately RED has not yet released code via SDK or similar to decode their Build 16+ RAW streams as native RAW files (not RGB deBayered files). We hope this is not for protective reasons for other partners. We hope its just that they hadn't time to do it yet. At least the last is the attitude RED has left so far :) So thumbs up for that, for realtime RAW for the masses.

You need to know that SpeedGradeDI can deBayer via GPU directly, offloading massive processing from the CPUs to the GPU. The latest GPUs run significantly faster than an 8core CPU system on this subject. An the next GPU generation is just around the corner.

Anyhow, using RED CINE or RED LINE in your pipeline allows for a fluent workflow even with RED footage on SpeedGradeDI. SpeedGradeDI offers also workflows for stereo vision if that is on your wishlist.

You can contact me privately if you like, but give it some time to react, I am pretty busy these days.

Cheers,
Axel

Hi Bettsy,

I'm a long time SpeedGrade user as well and embraced Iridas' colour correction tool for my Red workflow since day one. Iridas' knowledge regarding RAW, film/video pipeline and colour manipulation is truely outstanding.

If you are anxious about a "newcomer" please note that Iridas' FrameCycler is the de-facto review app./player standard in digital filmworkflows around the globe and by now means a "newcomer".

There is a solid world-wilde userbase/community in which Axel and I take part. These user shoot Red but also many other formats, from 35mm to Dalsa, Arri D20/21, Phantom HD, SI2k, F900 or even HDV.

For any questions please feel free to contact me off-line.

Kind Regards,

Hans

The user base of Speedgarde is much smaller than let's say Scratch but you will find the all people using it are pretty top of the game. If you are around London you can come down to see it in action.

Thanks guys. I'm so please to hear it. I' get onto them for an evaluation and test it out in our facility.

Not sure when I'll next be in Europe, but I'll be sure and look you guys up when I am.

Dado's right on that - if you compare SpeedGrade XR/DI against Scratch.

If you count the bigger FrameCyclers as well (FrameCycler DDS and FrameCycler DI), which are often used similarly to most Scratch seats (conforming, QA, review), I believe the stats are in our favor.

Of course there are also thousands of FrameCycler Pro seats - but that's a different product.

We've been around for a while...

Speedgrade DI Workflow

Speedgrade DI Workflow

Any advice on what would be the best post production workflow using the Speedgrade DI as the Backbone. From offline editing, visual effects, color correcting and onlineing/conforming.

Editing using Final Cut Studio.
Speedgrade DI running on Windows.

Thanks!

I am also interested in some workflow advice for Speedgrade XR. If we conform in AE using Cineform, what is the best way to get the project into Speedgrade XR?

Thanks.

Edgar

Hi Edgar,

the workflow is straightforward. If you use Cineform, you simply output a CMX 3600 EDL from AE, then conform that in SpeedGrade XR. Since we support the Adobe Syntax for putting the name of the Cineform (or other file type) file into the CMX comments, your conform is a very simple process, since you can reference the original Cineform files.

You can of course swap them out at any time for the native R3D files which are then decoded through the RED SDK (plug-in currently in beta). Or you can use full res Cineform files directly.

Feel free to be in touch to discuss your needs. See http://www.iridas.com/company/contact.html

So What's the best system to Run the Speedgrade DI on? MAC, Windows, Linux? I know that the Windows version is only 32-bit so you have a 2TB storage limit. Any recommendations? I want to be able to handle 4k features and stereoscopic features as well.

Thanks!
