  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone using Avid 8 yet? Is it buggy?

Was wondering if anyone grabbed it yet... I tend to stay away from .0 releases but might give it a whirl on a non critical machine...Am downloading now to maybe test it...

Good news to see Avid coming with a new version.

Well the download center works... My 4 years of free upgrades ends this year so I am trying to get to 8.xx by Dec is my goal, and then re evaluate if I will continue to pay per upgrade or go on to resolve/fcpx

What I found, even though I've only tried it on an ISIS-system on a regular Mac Pro, I find it too slow. It's not working at all in that situation. It takes around 2 seconds to do a regular edit, 3-4 seconds before a selected part of a clip gets onto the timeline when draging it down to it.

I don't understand why the hell Avid doesn't just redo the entire freakin software into a new code base that works together with CUDA and OpenCL. I'm so tired of having a workflow based around Avid because I'm stuck with this sluggish performance.
As soon as something better, like premiere beats Avids reliability of larger projects I'm going to jump ships. I've been trying to get Avid to understand how slow their software is the past five years but they don't listen and they don't seem to care.

Few things:
I'm not saying MC8 is great. I don't use it because I want to be able to use ScriptSync. Heard some nasty things about 8.1, so I won't go there until a future update.

However, I'm thinking a 'regular Mac Pro' is kind of an old machine to run present day software on. I mean, even the last ones they sold had pretty old processors in them for 2012, let alone 2014.

That said, MC7 even runs OK on my 7 years old XW8400 (dual-quad 2.33). Maybe the PC version is more solid than the Mac version? Although I also occasionally run v7 on my Mid-2009 MacBookPro, also runs pretty well. I just don't see the 2-4 seconds of waiting time. Come and think of it, I ran v7 on a 2010 Mac Pro, no I/O hardware, FireWire800 and/or internal SATA storage, and this worked fine (DNxHD36 24p feature film), meaning that there was no such thing as a multi-second waiting time for playback or segment manipulation.

Is your sequence long and/or multi-layer? Are you using the PlayLength feature? The latter seems paramount to me for longer and/or multi-layered sequences. Always has, since the ABVB days.

I'm using it on a IMac 7 32Mb ram. No real problems with it, pretty stable but then again I'm working DNxHD 36 timelines.

My biggest criticism of it is it's "laggy' with the tool tip & roller functions. Certainly not as snappy as other NLE tooltips . Seems to keep track of everything though with about 50 hours of footage.

You can edit direct to a timeline with R3D's without the need to transcode but I don't know if want to 'go there' with all that footage.

Is there a major difference between 7 and 8? I thought the jump in number was merely to account for the shift to a subscription based model.

No it's for the 4k timeline support, the new codec agnostic platform, the implementation of the node base effects tool and a new color correction tab.
LoL! Well done AVID!

Pat

Whoa, don't do that! People are gonna have heart attacks!

I give 4K support by Avid at least six months and more likely 9 months (in time for NAB 2015).

v7.0.4 and 8.0 are pretty much the same. 8.1 is a real update, but from what I read, not as solid a release as one would like.

So still no 4K from AMA?

How are folks getting around re-framing if say they are finishing in HD?

Is this still a Resolve step?

v.7 introduced FrameFlex that allows 2K+ reframing for HD finishing. AMA link to your 4K file and either reframe on source or in tlmeline as needed.

You're wrong. It will be a lot sooner than that. But I can't tell you exactly how I know ;-).

2K/4K has been publicly announced to be before end of year. My guess is within the next 7 days.

I'm using avid 8.1 on a project right now, very few crashes so far... but i did consider a rollback at times

I am testing MC8 since yesterday on an "old" Mac Pro and I was pretty surprised about how well it performs compared to Symphony 6.5 on the same machine. I expected it to be much slower, but until now everything is fine and seems to fly (well, i don't talk about my blackmagic driver problem right now …)
testing with 5 tracks of MXF36/1080p content.
best wishes and kind regards,
martin
