  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone used SmallHD DP6 with Epic or Scarlet via HDMI?

Hi guys,

I've been searching for the answer to my question for almost a month but still haven't got a definite answer.
So, for those of you, who have used DP6 monitor with EPIC/SCARLET via HDMI, here goes:
does the monitor have to be mounted upside down and image flipped in menus when using DP6 with Red cameras via HDMI?

source: http://www.smallhd.com/s.nl/ctype.KB/it.I/id.1694/KB.870/.f

I have a feeling that this information above applies only to Red One and not EPIC/SCARLET but would like a confirmation.

Thanks and happy holidays,
Kamilla

I can test it out this week and report back if no-one beats me to it.

Even if you need to mount upside-down and do an image flip on the SmallHD it really isn't a big deal. The SmallHD has mounting points on all four sides. I currently have two DP6's mounted upside-down on top of each other because it is just more convenient based on where the SDI barrel connectors are located.

On a separate note, the DP6 does not like the 720p signal that comes off the SDI tap on the Epic. I would assume this is because of it being a non-standard 29.97 refresh rate. I don't know if this will also apply to the HDMI but I can confirm that as well. Easy enough workaround by just outputting at 1080p.

It would be really appreciated if you could make this test and share your findings. Also, I know that mounting DP6 upside down is not a big deal (I own one). The problem is the placement of HDMI connector. If I were to mount the monitor upside down the cable would stick up in the air and that is not very practical in some configurations.

Fired up fine for me. 720p output from the camera, straight into the DP6 with no adjustments.

I've been using 3 different DP6's through HDMI with no problems. I had a slight issue with a DP4, but a firmware upgrade from a 2.0.2 to 2.0.5 seems to have fixed it.

I do notice the SDI output into my DP6 has a funny refresh issue at the top of the monitor, as if it lags a bit. Anyone else notice this with their DP6-SDI monitor?

I want to buy a cheap Scarlet setup and add later in 2012 further accessories like a BOMB EVF.

My plan was to use two DP6, one over HD-SDI as on camera monitor with menus (controlled via REDmote) and one over HDMI to a transmitter for the video village and for the focus puller.

Would that setup work? How about the mentioned HD-SDI lag with the DP6?

Kyle and Richard, do you find the DP6 good enough for critical focus in run and gun situations?

Scarlet will not output both HDMI and sdi at the same time. You will have to use one or the other and split the signal. The Epic is supposed to output both in a future firmware update, but for now it does not.

Soren, I love the dp6 as a focus monitor. It's quite sharp visually and it offers a new focus assist feature from their latest firmware update that keeps the picture bright and viewable. You'd have to see it yourself to determine if it is usable to you. Of course true critical focus should be measured but in a run and gun situation I don't know of any field monitor that is above and beyond the dp6. Several other ACs I've worked stated the smallHD is their current monitor of choice. Especially for the price.

I agree with Kyle, the DP6 is a great monitor with much better resolution than the Red touch screen and great for focussing. But it's not a touch screen, so you'll lose the touch focus abilities and will need to power it. I run mine on Canon batteries, but you could use a D-tap power cable if you're running larger batteries than the Red volts.

Small Hd are great monitors. We have had ours for several years, with no issues (DP 1).

On Red \one a DP1 can be configged to show all menus. If ypou need two monitors you could always get a Decimator II to split into HDMi + SDI.

Small HD support/company are beyond stellar - among the best I have ever encountered.

Do you guys know if the RED EPIC can out put both HD-SDI and HDMI simultaneously? A buddy of mine is having a problem with his DP6 not working via HDMI.

Mine works great on Scarlet - HDMI out, no issues at all. great monitor.
