  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone used SanDisk 64GB 90MB/s CF?

I am thinking to get SanDisk Extreme Pro UDMA 6 90MB/s 64GB CF. I should have about 30 minutes of 4K on this! But, I am afraid about dropping frames!
Anyone on the forum who used this? What are the results?

you can skip to the last page, without the properly flashed firmware from RED on the card, it locks it out to 2k record only. Not sure about the recording rate either. It's RED protecting you from yourself, which is highly debatable, but mostly that is their reasoning for doing this. They try extensively many third party cards to see if it can handle the continuous record of the cameras and have concluded that while these cards offer fantastic burst rate, their sustained rate isn't good enough for the R1.

These 90MB/s cards suck. They can only pretend to read at occasional bursts close to 90MB/s, they can't sustain reads much higher than 40MB/s on a good day and there seems to be a lot of variance from one card to the next. Write speeds are way slower and very erratic.

I think the 60MB/s cards offer higher overall performance than the 90MB/s cards.

They burst slower, but their sustained throughput is better. My tests show that they can sustain 30MB/s reliably. (AJA and Blackmagic tests over FW800)

I wonder why RED doesn't enable the 60MB/s cards for RC28 recording at all resolutions/framerates RC28 supports.

On a lot of jobs that would be a real boon. Of course, on those same jobs I'd be happy with 2K if I had 16mm or 2/3" glass for the camera.

Of course if I could buy 64GB RED CF cards for $750-900, I might just shut up.

That's a comparable mark-up to their 16GB cards. RED's card is $300. Sandisk 16GB 90MB/s cards are about $200. So RED's price is about 1.5x Sandisk's.

Sandisk 64MB 90MB/s cards are presently about $600, hence my $900 number.

Of course these are all UDMA cards.

What I'm really excited about are CFast (SATAbased CF) cards. I think that just updating the interface, without improving the flash modules in the cards, would be enough so most current CF cards would really live up to their marketing hype.

That would mean that would work flawlessly in a RED workflow with up to RC42. I expect that with a new CFast module, RED One could use any commercial SATA CF cards and run perfectly. EPIC and Scarlet should have modules available to make use of that.

The only available CFast card is a 64GB unit from Pretec, which is rated at 160MB/s. (Pretec also makes a 64GB 666x CF card, which they call 100MB/s... it seems they use the same flash modules.)

Of course... the way things are going CFast may be passed up by 2.5" & 1.8" SSD drives as media for RED and other high performance use. I don't see any indication that anyone other than Pretec is making them, and I certainly don't see extensive device support. Consumer devices seem to be headed for SDXC cards.

Think about it from a camera manufacturer's stand point....If they allow any run of the mill card to be used that is not qualified by Red and it looses your data or locks up, people will blame the camera....they may even go as far to say it is a Scam!

I remember Jarred posting about how many cards Red rejects because they do not have the sustained write speeds and fail....

Milan I tried yesterday the San Disk 64 G and the Red one did not accepted it.
