  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone try out the viewfactor wireless FF?

Yup, you're in the first 100. Delivery will be around the 3rd week of May.

We hit 100 units about two weeks before NAB.

We do, but we also have a tight schedule... so we're using local guys that we can get feedback from quickly... if you want to move to southern california then its a go :)

Thanks for the update. I'm looking forward to receiving mine. Hopefully it will arrive on time for a shoot planned at the end of May. Also, I have an official Red presentation for local production companies and other professionals on June 12th, I'll show it off on Red #500 "Stalker".

Cheers,
Damien

Yes, Impero will be able to control up to 6 motors (3 in standard ZFI, and 3 as slaves). Basically you can control one motor and the corresponding slave motor will duplicate the movements of the first motor. We've had about 4 different 3d camera companies approach us and ask for this functionality.

Excellent! In my left hand I do have the CC to make the order, but my right hand wants to make you a last question to be really sure, because the drawings of your examples in your web-side are not clear to me (apparently the Impero would have to be ALWAYS wired to the Inclino, which would be strange):

so my question: am I right that the Impero includes a wireless transmitter to control via an remote external receiver a set of daisy-chained (bus) Inclino motors?

Thanks
Istvan

The Impero standard, which can be ordered now, allows for the remote (wireless or wired) operation of ONE Impero motor. The Impero Pro (is that the name ?) will allow the operation of up to two times three motors.

Note : there is no external receiver, it is included in the motor, congrats on that !!!

Cheers,
Damien

looks like a great follow focus....
whats the possibility of a hand controller that allows iris and zoom control as well as focus?

The Impero controller allows independent control of three motors and each of those motors can have a mirrored slave. So you can control iris and zoom with this setup. I believe the Impero Pro is also on the drawing board for delivery at some point and it has a lot more functionality... Possibly things like lens breathing compensation. Check out the viewfactor forums. Most of the posts are older, but it gives you a glimpse of what has been discussed.

Indeed he said that, but what I do not understand is their diagram:

Apparently the Impero has to be wired all the time to to the bus which doesn't make sense to me.

You either wire the controller directly to the bus or you wire the receiver to the bus and the controller operates wirelessly. The diagram is a bit confusing.

Will there be an easy way to update the firmware of the components?

Impero ships with a receiver unit. The receiver unit needs to be plugged into the power (red or dtap) as well as the motor bus. All motors that are plugged into the receiver via the bus cables can be controlled via wireless.

The motors do not have a receiver built in... the receiver unit allows you to control up to 6 motors via the bus interface on the wireless receiver unit.

Impero can be run via wired or wireless. If its plugged in to the motors via the bus cable then its wired... if its unplugged and the receiver unit is plugged into the bus cable then its wireless.

The Impero has a usb port for firmware upgrades

*drools*

i was waiting to hear impressions from NAB on these bad boys. This, along with the Red One, are must buys for me.

Closer to the end of June.... the lead times for some of the components are upwards of 8 weeks. We have enough material for about 100 units of the motors but just placed the order for the next production run only a couple weeks ago.

Hey there Curt,

I just wanted to say personally that I am blown away by what you guys are doing over at VF. Congratulations ! It's great to see it all come to fruition.

Secondly and more selfishly :) I payed for the Impero/Inclino combo a while back (not sure when exactly, I think a month or so ?.. it was right when your online store opened), just wondering what a lead time might be on an order like that ?

Thanks Curt !
Seth.

If you placed an order when the store opened then you will have it before the end of May. BTW... thanks for the order :)

Hey Curt, I was wondering when you will get the final production model in so you can take pictures to post on here. I am still wondering how big the controller is and what not.
The final production models are due in a few weeks... we are really cutting it close for our May ship date but its looking like we are going to just squeak by. The controller is much bigger than what we were showing at NAB... heres some of the views with some dims.

Also, how loud are the motors?
This has been answered a number of times but once again.... when other motor manufacturers give actual data for their noise levels I'd be surprised. Ours are going to be quiet enough to use them as a conventional follow focus on the camera. We are working on doing a head to head comparison but thats going to have to wait until we are shipping.

I don't see the PDF attached... Is it just me?
EDIT: Nevermind. There it is. Very cool! Can't wait to hear user reports from the finished product.

Hi Curt.

Im planning on getting one of your FF sets when my camera number comes up, wasnt able to get to Nab (was in good old london), the FF Impero is 9v, is that a PP3 9v battery or coin cells? Just wondering as I have a bunch of batteries here and wondering which ones I will need to get (or already have).

Thanks.

Andrew.
