  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone see the new Canon 18-80 announced today?

Not sure if this is the appropriate forum, so apologies in advance if I'm out of line posting this here - but for those of you who are looking to shoot a fair bit of run and gun, shoulder mount work (sports, doc work etc) with you Scarlet-W, this might interest you.

Canon have just announced the CN-E 18-80 t4.4 IS servo s35 zoom at a crazy $5225 US dollars (B&H link - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...1714c002_cn_e_18_80mm_t4_4_compact_servo.html).

Specs below lifted from thecinelens.com

I know a lot of people will complain about the T stop, I get it, but it's a run and gun lens from the ground up and drastically out prices the fujinon 20-120 3.5 announced just the other day which I know alot of Scarlet-W shooters were excited about.

There's a nice write up on newsshooter.com - http://www.newsshooter.com/2016/04/...s-a-lightweight-cine-zoom-for-the-rest-of-us/

Edit: Interview video with a dude from Canon confirming it's Parfocal also - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora...purpose-camera-and-compact-servo-lens-article

Cant wait to see some footage.

I saw that on B&H earlier. I never realised it was $5k?? I can see this being used in shoulder rigs for a run and gun shoot. Like they said in B&H. It still a Canon Cine lens, but with the functions of the L series lenses (The AF and the IS)

Run-n-gun and doc don't rhyme with T4.4 in my mind at all. You need at least T2.8 for a real run-n-gun all-rounder.

Yes it may be a T4.4, but for $5k?? It it were 2.8 you'll be looking at $10k+. It is a good cheaper alternative to Canon's other servo lenses

It is perfect for run and gun shots. I like the fact that it is still a Canon Cine lens, but has characteristics that the L series lenses have (AF and IS). It is relatively inexpensive (In servo cine lens terms) at just over $5k. This will be a very good lens for documentaries or run and gun shoots

pretty cheap, but T4.4.
if i was shooting a doc, outside, could be nice.

Yeah I hear you Demetri, t2.8 would be ideal - but it comes at a cost. Fujinon's closest offering in this pricerange is the 20-120 3.5 at 15k, or a secondand 18-80 at around the same price (and it's heavy in comparison). If I wanted just one lens, I'd be going all in on a 2.8 zoom for sure, but I have a full range of fast primes and fast L zooms to fill that void if needed, and it all comes down to the type of work you do really. A lot of my work is unscripted doc style, motorsport, talking heads, unpredictable moving subjects etc - so t4.4 doesn't bother me too too much. This lens means I could do most jobs with 3 lenses instead of 5.

I was a bit too harsh. To keep the lens small and light and stabilized- it would be hard to go much faster especially with the price tag. Not bad at all....

I understand that T4.4 is not idea but for the $5k price point, it isn't that bad. If you were to get T2.8 or T1.2 etc then you'll be looking in adding another 10k. Its good for the price point

its a nice focal range and size but the speed sucks unfortunately.

Saw that today. Last month I shot a 4 day fashion runway event. The first day I tried holding focus at f2.8/f3.5 (failed mostly as I couldn't time the walks perfectly). By the 4th day I ended up sticking to f8/f9.1 to ensure I was in focus the whole show. Thinking back today I would have loved to use this lens on the Scarlet. Super shallow DOF is overrated sometimes.

At the very least let's hope that this prompts some of the other companies to come out with similar priced options

Once full frame doc shooters realise that T4 is a reasonable compromise, they may be drawn toward UHDTV 2/3 inch lenses and adapters.
Pricey at moment though...
The 18-80 isn't a bad drone lens, tricky focus using T1.8 at 80mm on a drone.
$5k doesn't raise the blood pressure too much:)

Adapting b4 to super35 and FF would eat a lot of light, you'd be stuck with like F8 or smaller I'd imagine? The glass would have to be immaculate too. Doesn't sound like it would be very cheap.

Where as for $5000, this is a t4.4 IS s35 zoom ready to shoot. Makes sense to me :D

Props to Canon, this looks like the "kit" lens for owner/ops the market has sorely needed. I agree that T4.4 will be a PITA in many docco situations. That said, being lightweight counts and the deeper stop will only make it easier to pull focus in unpredictable situations. Moreover, listing the things this lens isn't ideal for is missing the point. Light enough for many gimbals and drones, easier to balance vs the front heavy nature of most handheld rigs sporting much weightier glass, etc.

I also think it could boost Raven and Scarlet-W sales to folks who might have had their budget busted by the cost of lensing for an S35-ish sensor. Yes, they could go with stills lenses, but for a lot of everyday shooting situations the producer expects the shooter to be on a zoom. Just sayin'

Cheers - #19

I was thinking the same thing!

I was thinking the same thing!

When I read this announcement I was thinking that this would be a great lens for the Raven as well. What's interesting is that the lens has built in ND filters.

T4.4 actually makes it a total deal-breaker for run n' gun docs. That's just too slow when you have unpredictable lighting conditions. I understand why you guys say it's good for the price point, but the reality is that more often than not, productions that can only afford a $5000 lens are usually the productions that most need fast lenses, because they usually can't afford adequate lighting packages or professional DI work.

I agree that this lens could be most useful for live events that have plenty of light, like sports.

Agreed. 2.8 is the slowest I'd go on something like this for doc run and gun work, personally. Even that can be a stretch in low light situations sometimes.
