  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone regretted going for build 16?

So tempted to do the update, but the no way back thing kinda worries me, so looking for feedback...

Anyone regretted doing it?

Or are the bugs too rare to matter?

I've not had a single problem so far... but that probably means we're not pushing the machine far enough i guess... :)

.. i personally think that the release build 15 was more beta than the beta release of 16 :)

There's a lot of codec error out there which is because of high contrast in the frame. That means that backlight in frame is not really working. Until RED has solved that problem I consider it to be very BETA. I jumped on 15 for professional work when it came, with only minor problems, but the problems I came across with 16 are severe.

Not a problem

Not a problem

We just finished shooting the second leg of a three part feature entitled "The Rain Chronicles" - 16 day shoot in 4K which ended up being about 2T of footage without a single issue.

We even rigged our own homemade GPI cable to trigger an undercrank ramp shot. We shot the first leg of the film on super 35 last year and did a DI at 2k because the RED wasn't available at the time. But the rest of the film will be shot using RED.

The film stars Dee Wallace and Richard Lynch. Our dp is Lon Stratton, and operator Robert Skates and Patrick Elliot 1st A.C. Our 2nd was actually our data manager Christopher Hoyle. We layed off our footage to a G-Safe RAID with back ups to Western Digital 2T (RAID configured) Harddrives and ultimately archived all footage to LTO-3a tapes. I'll post some frame grabs in the coming weeks.

No Regrets Here

No Regrets Here

I just shot some segments for a new TV show hosted by Al Sharpton. The location was dark and moody. The camera ran flawlessly, and the noise reduction was a great help given the circumstances. The image is phenomenal and colleagues have described the results as looking like 35mm.

The show will be finished in 720P and being able to crop into the image to emulate more focal lengths is fantastic.

On build 15 my camera would lock up when playing back takes from the Red Drive. With 16 that problem is gone.

I hope to post some stills soon.

Watch out for longer clips

Watch out for longer clips

hi,

Have any of you successfully used recorded takes longer than six minutes that can be encoded by Via Compressor?

I am troubleshooting a problem with RED with a problem I have had. Any QT file over about six or seven minutes can not be encoded by Compressor and results in a QT error 2 message.

If any of you have successfully, or not successfully encoded longer takes to QT in build 16 then please let me know. and please let RED know as we are trying to test this.

Thanks,

David

Even more reasons for a larger beta testing program.

David, have not tried yet, I presumed these 6 + minutes clips can be rendered out by RedAlert and not VIA Compressor - Lim

Yes, I regret I haven't done it earlier :sarcasm:

Hey Battistela? What work flow are you using. I know when I turn in some of my time lapse work using Digital stills the QT files are around 500mb to 1gb at time and the post department called me up and said that their older Avid software could not handle any clips over about 3 or 400mb. Just wondering.
