  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Yes I am lazy. Thank you for asking. Thats why I invented the ROVER wireless recording remote control. Weight is 1 oz.

Now you can "roll camera" up to 50 feet away with this tiny wireless widget no bigger than a car key fob.
Perfect for drive-by directing. Giant jibs. Steadycams, And wire rigs.

Just as a quickie test for the potential market for this, please let me know if anyone else might be interested in this product. My first model was made for my own use and called Rover1.

Red Camera 1144

Simple Instructions:

1. Plug Rover Receiver into Red Camera
Aux. power Lemo connector in back of camera.

2. Press any button to trigger remote recording.

3. Press again to stop recording.

That's it. (Up to 50 foot range.)
Cost to purchase is $199.95 plus applicable tax and shipping.

Is that "any button" on your Red Camera or "any button" on your device? And if the latter, how many buttons do you have? And if the former, it doesn't seem too remote to me.

Either of two remote buttons on the key chain fob. Just a momentary trigger to start or stop recording by RF signal to a tiny receiver plugged into the GPIO aux connector on the back of the Red Camera. Receiver is powered from the camera. And the remote fob contains a tiny battery. So max distance is about 50 feet of wireless on/off recording.

If Epic uses same record button connector configuration as MX....

If Epic uses same record button connector configuration as MX....

Works on EPIC as well? or only RED ONE?

Haven't tested it on an Epic, yet. But if the CTRL pins on the back of the Epic are the same 4 pin Lemo configuration. (If 1-2 pins are the same setup as the MX and 3-4 are the 12v dc power out, then it will function on both cameras as a plug and play remote record button.) Same as a wired version with a momentary switch to trip the record circuit. The receiver works in any DC power range from 10V to 18V DC, so it will still trip the record function even if the battery pack is running low. Works fine on my MX. It gives a director an awesome sense of power to roll camera and cut scenes instantly. A little red light on the Fob flashes on for a moment on button pushes.

I wish it were simple to conform to standard run/stop.. for example on Preston/C-motion/Microforce... But unfortunately its requirements are entirely new, and unlike any camera. The cable is also much smaller and pins are different, the Epic connector carries Timecode/Genlock and Start/Stop.

I'll check with my tech squad tomorrow on the Epic GPIO, but the MX is working fine with the Rover remote fob. Fortunately, the RED MX is a fairly simple device to start/stop by hardwire or remote and not all that mysterious.

The epic needs a voltage applied, it isn't just a momentary contact like the red1. Mitch Gross and Deanan had some info on it in another thread.

The EPIC uses a Schmidt trigger and needs a sustained supplied voltage to keep the circuit closed. We're working on a simple, low-cost product solution. But when the Pro I/O module comes along it will have the identical Lemo-4 that the RED One has, so your Rover design will work with that.

Thanks Mitch. Good info. The current Rover design has a 0v momentary close on the RED MX
1-2 pin Aux. port. The make or break circuit for the Record mode resides in the camera.

Mitch,

Is your current Epic CTRL -sustained power voltage - Schmitt Trigger running in the 3v-5v dc low/high range?

A few small in-line batteries would hold the circuit closed, if you didn't want a more elegant solution from a mini circuit board. As the RED camera product line evolves and changes, it seems like the more modular you make the after-market products and accessories, the easier it is to adapt functional usage for the end user.

We have a few variants that we're considering. We want this to be cheap to manufacture so it is low priced to end users. We also want a certain versatility, one that I won't go into here. Anyone can stick a battery inline with a switch; we're trying to do something more.

The best solution is usually simplicity. My first remote prototype design was using a pulse width modulation chip with a 9V battery to mulitask the record trigger, and also generate variable control speeds for the lens zoom and focus power on my SI-2K camera by hardwire. Worked fine but a bit bulky and had to replace the battery every two days.

The biggest need for the wireless remote on the Red MX was fumbling around to find the record button when all the other bells and whistles were attached to the back end or when mounted to a high rig. Now I just clip the Rover trigger pendant on my pants belt loop, yell action, and record away.

Before you start manufacturing any circuit designs, really bench test the beta product to work any bugs out and get a green light from a good patent attorney on the design and application usage. If it infringes on an existing patent, get a license to sell and/or manufacture the design or else the big bucks go towards a new yacht for the patent holder and his crack team of beady-eyed lawyers. :reddevil::reddevil:
