  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone has a Lean & Mean Red ONE I can copy the config?

I would strongly recommend to stay with the Red LCD, it is ultra light weight, high quality, powered by the cam, and shows you all the menus of the camera. I haven't seen anything that can beat it for a Red One.

Damien,

Both the Small HD DP1 and the Manhattan LCD I linked to display full RED menus.

I have examined the Manhattan LCD now and it is comparable in build quality to similar sized Panasonic monitors, and sturdier I think than the RED LCDs

I have not yet examined the SmallHD DP1.

The primary advantage of the RED LCD's is that they are powered by the camera. Of course in some circumstances, that is a liability. Depends on the operator/assistant preferences and production climate.

Do you know why is this? When I called Red Sales they mentioned the fact that thye do not support the Birger Mount but they did not have a lot of info...yet I see people using them. Would this also apply to the Optitek or even the other mounts like Panavision etc that I have seen around the net?

They did support the Birger mount for a period but, for undisclosed reasons, that support has been discontinued, but not retrospectively. Ie if you have a Birger Mount previously installed and approved by RED via Birger then your warranty is still OK and you can still use the Birger. New users won't be able to install a Birger mount without affecting warranty sadly.

I have no idea why this might be, but I can take an educated wild ass guess: RED needs to focus its efforts on Scarlet/Epic, and they have to reduce costs and liabilities stemming from RED One cameras.

RED wants to encourage users to move from a third party solution to a 1st party solution, i.e. the electronic Canon and Nikon mount adapters for Scarlet and Epic.

I would also imagine that this will apply to any non-RED lens mounts that in any way modify the RED body. Possibly to any modification that modifies the body.

From what I know the Birger and Optitek mounts are fine pieces of gear, I don't expect that any quality concern is what led RED to this decision.

I think they want any 3rd parties that make major modifications to the RED to take full responsibility for the camera though, like Panavision does with its Panavised RED cameras.

Also, there is a chance that they need to reduce support for RED One as they gear up for Tattoo, Epic and Scarlet, which together are going to bring vast sales volumes and support nightmares to the RED offices.

Not to say they are ending support for RED One, just that they can't extend full support to 3rd party gear anymore.

Finally, and this may be stupidly optimistic conjecture: RED may be about to introduce their own electronic Nikon and Canon mounts for RED One, perhaps as a spin off of work they are already doing for Scarlet and Epic.

I was thinking also about this as I saw the specs for some Scarlet models have a Canon mount option...so either they will bring the Birger mount around ( not likely ) or they already have their own RED solution...

RED doesn't "support" any 3rd party anything that I'm aware of. You got a problem you go to the manufacturer, not RED.

In Birger's case they used to say if you install it we won't cover any damage caused by the install or the mount. Now they are saying "if you install it and don't damage anything and your fan breaks we won't fix that under warranty". I think RED has a one year warranty so it really sucks for new buyers.

I think there's a good chance there's going to be an active used RED ONE marketplace with good deals on that camera once EPIC & Scarlet arrive. Many of those are out of warranty so sticking a Birger on those is fine.

RED does have a competing solution to the Birger mount coming out. They have a pro remote that controls it and has a follow focus. Hopefully it'll work really well.

Optitek still "warranty legal"

AFAIK there is no warranty issues with the OptiTek Nikon ProLock kit.
since the Prolock is a strictly mechanical solution at this time the Red approval holds true and I have no info about that changing...
