  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anyone got a workflow for avid fcpx autosync, back to avid? plural eyes wont export

we are under the gun. apparently reds drift without a sync box, and production was unaware. This is not something you would wish on ANY assist editor without automation, run and gun doc really long takes on audio with 30 second red shots from multi cam and we don't have the time to not automate and red giant wont have a patch in time... please email me, call me, anything would be a life saver!

ideally looking to not transcode is the goal. i am well aware i can transcode, what i really want is a non transcoding workflow to sync it and bring it back since its an avid editor gig...

If it's really long takes, there's not that much to sync in the first place.

Download the free 30 day Media Composer trial, start transcoding to DNxHD and bring the transcodes into Avid as they are created. Make individual sequences for each clip and mark the slate sticks with an in-point.

When you get the audio, mark the sticks and Autosync in the individual sequences you created.

Here's some explanation, except you'll be syncing by in-marks, not TC

Have fun

the audio is long takes, the video is really short takes

the cameras stopped and rolled randomly all day, audio rolled entire day... I called Red and got a few hints I passed along to the production but if they dont work transcoding it is. There are a lot of little clips and the point is automate as much as possible is the goal for budgets

plural eyes crapped out on us even with one channel to one channel and no video, found less sync then autosync did with bad time codes...we were afraid final cut would screw up the autosync too and are doing it by hand...it was horrible lol, and im gonna do it all weekend, but at least im couch editing it now...

If the sync is drifting, then my guess is that sound was at 24fps and picture was at 23.976fps, or vice versa. There are ways to fix this, but it's not simple or easy. You'll have to do a series of tests to determine what the problem is, then pull the sound up or down to match.

It's always, always recommended that you do a thorough workflow test prior to production. And you should always use a timecode box on the camera to ensure precise synchronization with sound.

Transcoding is not the issue here -- audio speed is the issue. If you have to sync it by eye, you sync it by eye. I've personally synced maybe a dozen documentaries entirely by eye in the 1980s and 1990s. It can be done -- you just need patience and skill, plus a lot of time. If the assistant editor has even a modicum of skill, they should be able to figure out the sync from context. There are plenty of utilities out there that can slide the sound as required, but it will take some time to determine what the solution is.

we ended up trying just 1 track from camera with 1 track from field recorder and plural eyes still would fail on us. at this point we gave up and synced by hand. the goal of going from avid to fcpx was to take advantage of fcpx to automate the syncing. but in the end production and i were afraid the results wouldn't pan out like pluraleyes wasn't.

according to their audio guy both were 23.98. I even went back to the metadata myself to verify this. he claims reds will just drift without a sync box and that is the answer. regardless i wasn't on the shoot or involved with the production, just got handed r3ds to encode and sync and in the end we got it done on time, but over budget. the goal was to automate the syncing simply to save on them having to pay me to do it via hand... had it actually worked out via avids auto sync, or plural eyes this job would of been a fraction of the time it took me, but things just couldn't get automated in the end. it worked out better for me technically, but that wasn't my goal is the thing...
