Ok this is a very much off topic but in my quest to simplify my life I was wondering if anyone has simply given up on email and if so what is your alternative (in a functioning business). I find that no matter how well your spam filtering I am inundated with garbage on a daily basis. And I simply am not going to take it any more!!!

I gave up on Apple's mail apps because of the lousy spam filtering. I use Gmail and have set it up to check my POP account at my domain. Spam filtering has been awesome. My client communications are almost entirely email.

Thanks Christopher. I will have to look into Gmail for my own domain. I was trying to avoid moving my business domain to google so I could have more control of my hosting but the spam is getting to me.

Minor point here: You don't have to move your entire business domain to google. You can just use google for mail, and keep everything else separate. Without going into painful detail, this is done by "redirecting your MX server to google." If you (ahem) google that phrase you'll find all kinds of tutorials, especially specific to your hosting provider.

Somewhere in your hosting control panel/cpanel/domain management/SOMETHING there's the ability to redirect all -mail- requests to a different mail (mx) server. That way all of that traffic (pop.samirpatel.com, imap.samirpatel.com, or whatever), gets redirected to google, while all the other traffic (ftp.samirpatel.com, http://samirpatel.com) still hits whichever domain/hosting provider you have.

Basically, you can just use Gmail as your email program to get your mail off your pop server, just like you would use any other email program. You keep your mail server and just pop all your mail off it onto gmail where you can read it and it will do the job of filtering your spam for you.

Yes, be sure to provide all of your written communication, internet access and mobile OS to the control of the same corporative entity.
What could possibly go wrong.

I understand your concern about "Don't be evil" google and their rather dodgy track record lately (to say the least) however the idea was to use gmail as just a mail program as opposed to using the gmail mail servers, so you would still control the mail server and the issue would be more related to the fact that google could (and would!) access your data.

You could still move away from gmail to another mail program in the future.

Previous post was not addressing any particular post or person here or raising doubt about the positive intentions of respected colleagues.

Around $150 yearly gets you your own webspace with sufficient bandwidth and storage for most uses, with domains, mailboxes, blog etc, without allowing the owner of your internet search engine to dig through your correspondence, activities and sell your data around. And "suggest" one's thoughts and choices and filter one's perception of reality based on someone else's goals.

Spam issue is solvable by increased caution with contact info and email usage.

+1 on gmail, I have many legit emails that went into the junk folder with hotmail causing a lot of headaches with clients so I stopped using them. Gmail on the other hand, solid as a rock.

Whatever you do, remember to not use the Google gmail client because of no local stored version of emails. You can set up a pop access to gmail I think, so you can take into your regular email client and backup your emails for legal reasons
