  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hello Guys,

Anybody using ShotPut Pro??? Pros/Cons???

Thanks in advance,
Prio

yes, it checksums your data, and gives a report, downside it's slower to do the transfers by about 1.5x depending on the speed of the connection and mac.

most of the time this isn't a problem, but you do get times where it is too slow and you have to just transfer it.

Tom, are you using it regularly??? do you endorse it???

What I like is the ability to transfer to multiple drives (3) in the same procedure. Right now I have a 17" MAcbook w/ dual Lacie bus powered 1terr. drives in a pelican and manually do all the backing up and "check summing". The second backup rarely gets done for obvious reasons. So, I am considering it but would like some real world confirmations of it's operation???

I posted a page comparing ShotPut and other copy/checksum applications vs. R3D Data Manager here:

http://www.r3ddata.com/compare/

As far as I am aware, ShotPut doesnt do true checksums to compare files. It uses a read-back method. That requires access to the original to compare the files. With R3D Data Manager, the checksums are saved with the footage, so you can re-check the files at any time, even years after the camera originals are gone.

Hello Conrad,

Does your package Auto download??? I.E.- insert a CF/Red Drive and the backup auto starts without prompts???

Thanks,
Prio

Hello Conrad, Thanks for the response!!

Auto copy is huge!!! In the heat of the moment an auto mode is great!!! No thinking needed. Set it up at the begining of the gig and just insert/connect and go!!! Confirmation of a successful copy and your good.

Cheers,
Prio

yes it dose but I did get my hands on r3d data manager this week end and, though I havnt put it through load tests etc, it seems to be a great soloution, but untill I realy get to test it, I can't say weather it's the best solution, but it looks like it's realy good.

Is this just when it's copying to multiple locations or for every transfer? The website claims it's faster than finder!?!?!

There was/is a copy utility for P2 that had that feature- P2 Genie. It was great but was not really properly implemented but the idea was great!!!

So Conrad, you got me gut hooked (fishing term)!!! What is the ETA on that feature???

Combine that with the software sending you an email/text/sms on completion with the copy result, it really becomes easy for those one-man-bands.

yes, now excuse me for getting all geeky. when I’m using a DIT station or a Mac book or tower machine, I make sure I check what ports run off what buses on the mother board. and from that work out the best way to transfer the files efficiently.

Now the 4k gear I go out with is eSATA external raid drive, internal raid drive and often a fw800 production external drive, with fw800 doing the transfers from CF cards and RedDrives.

when your against it and your having to back up allot of footage quickly, with that setup I would transfer to the internal drive first, make sure that it is all there. then transfer from internal to the fw800 production drive and eSATA.

this is faster because the because if you just use the RedDrive with it's FW800 connection you would be serving 3 drives at once giving 1/3 of the speed taking 3 times longer.

but if you transfer too the internal drive first thats once, then eSATA and fw 800 being on separate buses and the internal can handle the data rate of both giving a transfer rate of twice the time, though the eSATA back up would complete before the production drive (and if the production drive was e eSATA it would be faster still.

Though it is always better to transfer everything from its original source, if you shooting fast and need to save time these are the things you have to think about. Something a data monkey or runner would not and r3d data manager or shot-put pro does not do.

And all the transfer programs tell you is that what you have copied off the drive is the same as what is on your Reddrive/CF card. It doesn’t check that the footage is all ok and working, there are no dropped fames or problems.
So no one click solutions for that!

I dont think you will have a problem with bus speeds if you daisy your RED drive to you production and back up drive from the 800 port. I'm sure you can daisy into double figures before things start to slow! Plus transferring to the IHD.... then to, two back ups would take even longer surely!

Also I thought that Checksums were for checking that there are no errors in the R3D data!

Again when removing a RED mag/ CF your drop frame counter will tell you that there have been frames dropped and your Focus puller should be aware of that counter and report it, if frames start to drop. Then that shot can be done again before you move on!

Just my two pence worth!

Have you actually tested this out or are you just assuming, because I transfer from the camera drive using ShotPut Pro to 2 eSata drives via express34 and it runs at FW800 speed, it doesn't take twice the time because I'm transferring to 2 drives at the same time, so why would it take 3 times as long to transfer to 3 drives?

Also transferring everything twice ties up the computer for twice as long, which means you're sitting there doing nothing when you could be syncing dailies from the day before or something...
