Hey guys and gals! I have a meeting this Sunday (jan 4 2009) with a bunch of Apple certified pros that are interested in the red cam and red work flow. I think it's like 10 to 15 of them.

I'm not sure how much they already know about it because they are coming to this meeting at a local camera house(Milwaukee, yes we have red's here! and it's on fire!!) to get an overview of the camera and some of the possible work flows. But I'm sure they could answer some of the technical stuff about how there apps work with video(color, FCP, etc).

I will have my own set of questions (3k in FCP/color or whats in the works) but would be glad to voice some of yours as well. Please feel free to post your questions here and I will get back to you after the meeting.

ok, now start posting yall!!

Well, my priorities are:

- How to avoid gamma shifts, in particular when working with ProRes in FCP and native to DPX in Color

- How to handle 3K in full quality (full-debayer, scaling etc.). It's very important for us in Europe, since we need 50 fps frequently, not only 25

Looking forward to their answers…

Gamma shift and procedures for getting perfect gamma out to h.264 for the web. What's the process used to create the movie trailers on Apple's site?

How can one build correct LUTs for Color?
Why are they 16 points instead of 17?
Are they 1D (like Pandora) or 3D?
Are they limited to YUV space?

(Actually questions from Steve (Digital Praxis), but I'm equally interested)

Hi Charles
Didn't the Shake 10 bit update a few weeks ago fix the 10bit Quicktime issue ?
I haven't had time to check it out yet.

Nope. I'm getting garbage pixels / noise on the right edge of frame with Apple 10-bit UC. Same as before.

A couple biggies about Snow Leopard:

The under-the-hood mechanics of Quicktime have been thrown out and replaced, right? Right??

Gamma will be a non-issue right?

Probably covered by NDA's, even if they do know, though...

I know these will likely not be answered, so here's another:

How can I ensure gamma

yeah,

What's the best way to monitor 5.1 surround sound through Soundtrack Pro?

Is it a matter of plugging in a 5.1 speaker system into an amp and connecting it through the optical out on the back of a Mac Pro?

Thanks

Steve

Use a sound interface

Hi Steve!
The only way right now to get full 5.1 sound out of soundtrack pro is to connect a soundinterface to the computer. We use a fireWire interface but i guess a usb would work to. The interface outputs 6 analog channels of sound that we connect to each speaker. Ours have internal amps but if you use a reciever make shure it has 6 analog inputs and connect thru those. The digital output of the computer only gives you 2 channels of uncompressed sound. Only surround if you output the Dolby Digital or DTS stream from DVD player. Soundtrack Pro can´t output the sound in Dolby Digital on playback only as exported files. I hope that in the future Apple adds realtime output in DolbyDigital from Soundtrack Pro. This would be nice. Just connect to a home theatre system from your laptop... easy for simple jobs...
Hope this helps!

did u get us any answers?

Hi, thank you for taking your effort to gather everyones questions and opinions.

I want to ask them how Apple is handle DCI 2.6 gamma standard.

opps, I was too late.

Hey guys, sorry bout not getting back to you till now. The reason is they had no information! They were apple pros but I guess that term does not mean much. When I asked them the questions all I got was a bunch of funny confused looks or they would say "we will know when you know, they don't tell us anything". Sorry I was hoping for more out of them as well......
