  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any word on Dragon on or bigger sensor?

FAS RO DAH!

I am very excited by the secrecy around this upgrade. Allowing us all to speculate in this way is definitely the way to go when it comes to drumming up interest. Well played, Red.

Peter,

I agree. However when I researched my Nikon D700 and why it was superior in low light conditions - I came to the conclusion it was at least in part to the fact that they only put 12mp on a full frame sensor (as opposed to 24mp on 5D). I came away from the research feeling like it was the size/quality/spacing of pixels that matter not the sheer volume -- that in fact larger, well spaced pixels fared well in low light rather than cramming millions of smaller pixels together.

Im not sure where I am going with this but I wonder how people see this fitting into the current Mysterium X sensor and what it to come....Dragon perhaps?

I just want to point out one thing that is improving dramatically w/ new sensors is fill factor. FWIU, the F35 has a fill factor of only about 40%. The F3 has a higher one, and the F65's is even higher. The improving fill factor is a result of moving circuitry to behind the sensor, allowing for more sensor surface area to be used for gathering light. This design is referred to as "back lit."

As fill factor increases, the trade-off between resolution and low light performance becomes less of a conundrum.

It has been stated that the Dragon upgrade will cost more for the Scarlet as extra boards will need replacing ....does that mean a Dragon-upgraded Scarlet and a Dragon-upgraded Epic will have the same spec, with regards to resolution - and more importantly, frame rates? I won't need to buy an Epic if so.
Think about that for a moment and I think it's obvious this will not be the case.

Dragon Sensor

Dragon Sensor

Hi,

I think RED should be concentrating more on the DR part because if they are working on the resolution on the dragon sensor they should delivery the lenses that cover the resolution of the Dragon also...as EPIC resolution is already making lot of lenses unusable...

Up to what sensor size can the best lenses out now (Cooke 5/i, S4, Zeiss Ultras, Masters, Optimos) cover?

i wish dragon will surpass films dynamic range and that 800asa on redgamma matches 800asa on the historgramm when toggling between raw view and redgamma. :)

The Dragon is the shit...
Jim

Could we get a hint as to whether us R1MX owners may be able to upgrade to Dragon? This has concerned me for a while. When this is mentioned, people always bring up an old post where you mentioned something about R1 owners being sorry they sold their R1s. Is that still the case?

Nikon just released 7.3k, 36 megapixel camera for just $3k and D4 offers clean images in the range of ISO 100 to ISO 12800 on a full frame. Sure, it is not RAW motion, but DSMC camera nonetheless. Very impressive.

I think 6k sensor wold be absolute minimum to expect from the Dragon. Significant improvements in low light sensitivity would be welcome too.

I've had my EPIC less than 6 months, and now the board is off to waiting for the next big thing...

Not me folks. I'm having a blast with my EPIC, and I have not scratched the surface of all it's potential.

You speculate about the dragon, I'm gonna play with my EPIC. I'm not ready to move onto the "next big thing" just yet.

I'll let Jim and the boys worry about the future.. I'll stay in the present. It's fun

Jay

I'm with Jay on this one. As cool as it is to speculate about the next big thing, I'm so happy with EPIC as it is right now. Jeebus, we don't even have all the features enabled in the current camera! I'm sure Dragon will be awesome, but I'm inclined to hold my breath for a bit... Just as long as I can eventually get that EPIC-645, I'll be a happy guy...
