So I have three 16GB cards that are officially acting up/dead. From what Jarred said the problem seems to be the contacts inside the card. Likely they are worn out or damaged through use.

In the meantime I bought new cards which solved the problem but the old cards are just lying on my desk waiting for something to happen. Seems a bit crude to just throw away 900 dollar worth of equipment, no?

So I was wondering... can CF cards be repaired? New contacts? Wash them? Cut off a bit form the contacts side? Anybody an idea?

I've pulled apart SD cards in the past. They're just a little PCB with a memory chip on it. I assume CF cards would be much the same, except the contacts are pins rather than strips. It would definitely be worth cracking them open and seeing if you can see the problem. You could probably go down the road, buy the cheapest CF card you can find, and just use the plastic enclosure from it to put your expensive RED CF card in.
