  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any one see REDROCK mattebox

Finner, did you get a chance to see the Petroff mattebox at NAB? It was at the ste-man booth. http://www.petroff.ws/

(And, to be fair, it was displayed in a glass showcase and only pulled out and demoed by, I think, Petroff himself. So it wasn't manhandled and put to a grueling test like RedRock.)

Hey, RedRock, if from what I read about posts in general as far as how you guys operate like Red and Birger who really listen to their customers, then I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with your mattebox. :)

I noticed on the Petroff and Arri matteboxes, the diameter of the knobs where very wide. Maybe this prevents screwing it in at the wrong angle and helps handling better? Something to consider in your next design. (I don't care about the colors, red, blue, or black, give me a good build instead... I'll live with machine metal if necessary).

X- Mate Box

X- Mate Box

I acquired a X-Matebox from HysomFilms (http://www.hysonfilms.com) and I do not regret it, so far. Capable of both, 15 & 19mm. Good price for the the box...

the main issue of getting one of them redrock MB's is that no matter how good they are or how cheap they are.. they'll take AGES to fucking make it and send it out. we've been hearing of it since ages... it looks smokin' so it is really good. i'm on the res. list... and im pretty sure id have to wait 3-4 months to get it.

We want em NOW. they could sell it for twice the money or 3 times but atleast get it out asap. the right way of doing it is making 100's of those in a month and sending em out to retail stores like bhphotovideo.

i'm just fed up waiting for shit to come out...

I think the matte box is well worth the price. After talking to Brian and other RR people at the booth, I got the impression they are obsessed with making this product work for us by making improvements where ever needed.

It's comforting to think that these companies are small enough to listen to us. I will order one this week as an owner operator, it is perfect for me. As far as renting my RED - then it will probably go out with a rental package with an Arri mattebox, along with lenses, FF etc. I'll just keep the RR matte box for my own use where I can keep an eye on the abuse :-)

Hi folks

wow - lots of feedback here in addition to the show.

Just a couple of things from our perspective.

First, someone incorrectly pointed out that the stages are plastic - All redrock filter trays are metal. Something requested by this community.

regarding the "paint coming off" - we pointed out the red knobs were in fact painted to demonstrate what red would look like - the finished versions are anodized. If you checked out the blue versions of the knobs at the show, it wasn't possible to get the paint to chip because they aren't painted. We tried to explain this point to everyone passing through the booth.

And regarding overall quality, these are first article matte boxes. What these are used to test is final design, fit, etc. What we expected to adjust are things like finishes (making sure they are matte vs. gloss, and that they all match), tolerances for screws, spec compliance (some of the screws were too short, as you probably saw), etc. All of these things have been addressed in the shipping units (and also why there is a longer lead time for when we ship). In addition, we have added some small enhancements (such as a larger bell shaped swing-away knob) suggested by folks at the show. Some incredibly pointed, persistent, 'let me tell you why' folks ;)

One of the areas that we didn't get a chance to finish on the microMatteBox prior to the show was to add nylon tips to the filter tray and rotating locking pins. What happened is that when people just yanked on the trays without loosening the pins, they grated and eventually started wearing into the filter tray surface. The nylon tips address this. Again, something we tried to point out to everyone in the shipping versions of the microMB.

And Finner, for the love of god you don't need to write so large! we got your request loud and clear and are working on something in that department. As you may recall, we took reduser community feedback and delivered a native 19mm rod at delivery time.

We have always appreciated the positive feedback from the reduser community (i.e., "what I'd like to see changed or added is...") - that fuels the spirit of innovation and gets better products into your hands. We have always said if you want an arri matte box and can afford the $$, then by all means. If you are looking for another option that is less than 1/5th the price and (we think) does not compromise quality or features, consider Redrock.

Cheers

Brian

That's the kind of professionalism and patience with the customer that makes me feel good inside every time I send you guys money.

And on top of that, the product rocks.

Thanks Brian!

Hey Guys,

First off, full disclosure:
I know Brian personally, and I own some of the Redrock Micro products.
In fact, they were quick to purchase one of my Monitors (The Carrion) and extremely generous to let me be at their booth to talk about it.

With that being said, I did spend some time at the Redrock booth and was able to play with the Matte Box for some time. I actually even showed it to some people that came just to see my monitor because I was so excited about it. Now, I'm not a RED Owner, but I have been in about 4 RED shoots, and I have to say that playing with the Redrock Mattebox was awesome. It had some of the features only found on the much higher end units. In fact I've been in some RED Shoots without a swing away matte box, and I tell you, changing lenses is a pain.

As soon as I can afford it, I will be getting one for myself. Now I understand that this unit is not for everyone. If you are personally making 150k + a year, why not spend on the Arri. I mean, you can afford it. (I'm sure they will last longer but I'm also sure that they will wear out. everything wears out)

But even then, as Barry mentioned, you could buy 5 units. and still be spending less. Plus your initial investment would be much less. Just buying one every 3 years. As a business person this would be ideal. (much like leasing your office equipment) Spending $800 on a matte box, and the remainder $3200 on a jib now might land you more gigs than using the $4000 for just a matte box. (substitute jib for whatever you want) In turn getting you more experience and more money and making you more viable in the industry. So you can choose.

So maybe for a rental house, this might not be the solution (though it has yet to be determined. Who knows these units might last just as long) But for most RED users, I think its a perfect solution. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a matte box, and I will put my money where my mouth is as soon as I get the money. (hahahah)

I mean, to not get this great product at a great price just because it doesn't have the name brand recognition would be as absurd as not getting a RED because its not Film. I mean, yes Film has more latitude and some benefits, but I've seen RED footage project on a big screen, and its the revolution of cinema. I mean, I've sat with people that will bash digital cinema, and I just laugh. Its all a tool, and if the tool can tell a story then its a good tool. This matte box is a good tool in my humble opinion. It blocks light and holds filters and functions efficiently.

So good luck with your Movie Making careers, and give the Redrock Micro a try. Like I said, I know Brian, and I know that he stands behind his products and his customer service is great.

That's what I love about this forum. The info is ten times better then surfing the net and checking out websites. And products improve!

My main concern and reason for considering a mattebox is the ND situation. I'll have to price out how much getting ND filters for each of my canon lenses will cost versus waiting and getting a mattebox like RedRock and mattebox filters. I think the mattebox will win out. :)

I think at this price point vs quality, the Petroff is in the ballpark.

Anyone with experience care to compare the two? I'm going to take a better look at the Petroff later this week. Hopefully RedRock will have a final version that I can check out as well. Where will I be able to check a "final" RedRock in LA?

P.S. (FYI: the paint was scraping off the flag itself. but if this is a prototype model for last minute nab demo purposes, then I'll take back my opinion until i see a final)

And Finner, for the love of god you don't need to write so large!

I would have thought someone of your mature status would of appreciated the larger text? By the way hope you were able to take advantage of all those senior discounts in Vegas.(ha)

we got your request loud and clear and are working on something in that department.

NICE!

Yes the 15mm off-set plus and option to take off all the swing-away hardware and go clamp-on for those really lightweight situation would make this perfect.

Aside from a great end product and listening to the customers throughout this journey, what really impresses me the most is how Brian has conducted himself on these board. Even after some very disrespectful comments a while back (before anyone even knew what was coming), Brian always came across as a class act.

Peace

Thanks for the feedback Finner, you confirmed what I already expected of Brian, his team and products. Every time I've chatted to Brian in the past he's been very receptive to improving the design of the MB. Wish I could've been at NAB to meet you both. Looking forward to roadtesting the RRMB in the not too distant future!

Great stuff
Paul

I was set to spend the money on the MB20 II, simply because no news are out yet for the delivery dates on the RED MB, and would simply love to have a RED gear package as complete as possible, especially after seen the BAD A$@! Primes and 18-85 Zoom, nothing short of the MP's.

But I must say when I played with the RR MB at the RED NAB event, I was very pleased with the MB, so much so that I immediately ordered the RED Edition with the additional Third stage ( and I suggest to every one else getting it to do the same, as you will most times then not need the third stage of filters with RED).

This MB is really an accomplishment, and again I say accomplishment, especially when you do considered the price point on this MB which is at list three times lower then anything alike.

Again Brian, I do not tiered to say how good of a job you guys did on this MB.

Now just shipped out to me already, wouldn't you!!!:)

Ciao

I took a look and wasn't impressed by Redrock. The quality was poor. In fact, one of the demos was already broken from people trying it out. The flag practically fell off in my hand. The screw was stripped. The finish (paint?) was scrapping off where the flag's tab is inserted into the body of the matte box.

One of the models on the floor seemed to be screwed up when I was there and that was tuesday. All the others appeared fine. The ones on display were not final. The swing-away arm is getting beefed up for the production model. Screws will not be painted, but anodized and available in red, blue or black. Although, you guys are all ordering black, right?

Screws that hold the stages and trays in place didn't appear to be easy to strip, but I saw people putting some serious torque on them, in the wrong direction. Production models will have nylon tips on the screws.

Overall, I thought the mattebox was pretty darn good. No, it's not an Arri or one of the nicer Chrosziel models. But It's still a great piece of kit. And for $800, it's plain awesome.

Finner, I was under the impression that the Red package for the mattebox would allow you to buy either the 19mm or the 15mm (100mm offset) version of the swing-away arm. However, this isn't showing in the store. I'm hoping this is still planned and it's just not ready yet or won't be until sometime after initial orders start shipping. ...Brian?

Hi everyone

Ketch I didn't realize you were in the booth - that may have been the day I had food poisoning :(

Jeff you have the finishes touches pretty much nailed in your description. We currently offer a 19mm and 15mm lightweight (60mm center to center) versions of the rod support for the swing-away arm. As I mentioned previously we are looking at a 15mm studio

Thanks

Brian

Hi everyone. Thanks for the enthusiastic response. It was great to meet everyone at NAB and I think the excitement about us making gear for the Red is mutual.

So you know, the filter trays were also painted at the show and will be anodized in the final production models. That's in addition to the nylon tips on the screws so you won't be able to beat them up nearly as well as the first articles at NAB. :)

Demand is insane, but that 8 week lead time stands. Note that other mattebox options at the show had double that lead time. :D

In LA, I know EVS will have some matteboxes eventually, if anyone wants to have a look at one up close.

Cheers!

i have a reservation, but just officially ordered it. $800 well spent :)

hopefully it won't take 2 months

Brian,
Any chance of finding out our place in line? Already ordered, and placed RSVP about a year ago now. Just curious.
Best,
- Peter
