I just saw it on freshdv.com and wow. I can't to get my red just to put it on it.

Yep, got it ordered. Looked amazing. Pre NAB I was seriously checking out other options since my camera is due around June. But, the anxiety is now over.

It's very impressive for the price. I played around with it, finding that pins, filter holders, swing away don't move smoothly. They assured me that this will all be fixed by estimated shipping date of late May-June. Filter holders are plastic, donut is foam, price is about 20% cost of ARRI.

Amazing piece of kit for the price. I would buy this matte box because Red will finish their clip-on one in about 7 months and everything else in the price range doesn't compare. I will probably own both a redrock a red mattebox eventually so that I can have a lightweight clip on model for situations where I don't want a big swing away box.

Anyway, some small/tiny quibbles:

1) The MB doesn't lock in an open position which would be really helpful in situations where you just want that thing to stay put while you changes lenses

2) The pull knob for the swing away locking mechanism is a little small and could probably not be operated if you were wearing even lightweight gloves. Sometimes it's cold when you're out camera assisting...:cold: :sarcasm:

3) The retaining screws for the filter plates and the rotation of the stages are WAY too close together. I have delicate little fingers and it's hard for me. I know a lot of guys with fat sausage fingers who will not like the placement.

Maybe Redrock will be able to resolve these tiny issues moving forward but even if they don't its still a great product. Seriously, if you need a matte box and you're not worried about having a top-tier brand name and just want the functionality, GO FOR IT.

I ordered mine and hopefully it won't take 60 days. I'm a reservation holder so hopefully it will be 30 days at the longest.

The build quality on it looks great! I'm very impressed with what they are offering. Hopefully their filters are equally impressive.

How closely did you look at the thing? I watched the video on FreshDV and it was clear that the filter holders were metal (they even said it.) Also, I would guess that within a few uses all the parts will slide more smoothly as they break in a little.

I've been wondering whether or not to post regarding the matte box. I have one ordered. I was curious about it, and wanted to see it first hand. So I did. I played with it. Touched. And asked all my questions and concerns about it. After that I went over to Arri's booth and played with the MB20 and the MB20 II. And I have to say, your matte box should definitely be an investment that is going to last you for years to come. Not just or 3, but 10 - 20 years. I didn't feel like redrock's matte box would hold up for that long. It's perfect for a short term solution and those who can't afford more. In comparison to Arri's though, it felt cheap and amateurish. When I use/rent my red one and other cameras I don't want me or my clients feeling embarrassed because of the equipment that they have to put on their camera. Red's matte box would almost be a perfect fit, but the clip-on camera is a little less than I need (hope to see their other matte box soon). But, unfortunately, I can't wait for R & D, and Arri's mattebox is class A, top notch equipment. You won't need to worry about your matte box breaking, or falling apart. If you treat it right, it could be the only one you buy for a long time. Just my 2 cents.

The gentleman at the booth said that he purposefully made this one tighter so that it would hold up throughout NAB. So, it was pretty tight, but the production models should be a little bit looser.

I love it! I was going to go Red but yesterday ordered Redrock instead.

Checked out the Redrock booth this morning. I'm really impressed with what you get for the money. If your an owner / operator trying to get by on a budget this box is a great deal. However, can't imagine it surviving in a rental / multi user environment.

I took a look and wasn't impressed by Redrock. The quality was poor. In fact, one of the demos was already broken from people trying it out. The flag practically fell off in my hand. The screw was stripped. The finish (paint?) was scrapping off where the flag's tab is inserted into the body of the matte box. And because the screw was stripped, it couldn't be tightened; so the only thing holding in place was friction. So once all the paint is scrapped off, it'll fall off on its own. But, hey, that's where gaffer's tape or duct tape comes in handy, right? :) If Redrock provides enough tape with their mattebox, I guess it might be worth buying. :)

You guys are so lame. Go ahead spend $2000 or more for other products that had less function. RED one properly starts around $4000.

Dude, they were pre-production models that have been manhandled by everybody and his brother. Cut 'em some slack.

Everything I've ever gotten from RR exceeded expectations, cost alot less than it should and works flawlessly.

No complaints here - and even if there were, at the price point I don't think I would. Thanks for another awesome piece of gear Red Rock!

i agree mostly...but i still pay money.

I thought the redrock mattebox was an amazing deal. I agree that the Arri is better, and I don't know how the redrock would hold up at a rental house. But that's not who it's marketed to.

Of course, if long-term lasting is what you're concerned about, you could always buy five or six redrock matteboxes and whenever one's close to wearing out, you just go to your closet and get another -- and you'll still spend less than the Arri.

Not knocking the Arri -- it's gorgeous. But the Redrock isn't trying to be the Arri. It's trying to offer all the best that the Arri offers, to the $595 customer.

You don't get something for nothing. But in this case, you do get a whole heck of a lot for not much, and that's not bad.

(note: this is first impressions; subject to change after more extensive experience with the unit). I'd have no qualms saying "buy the redrock mattebox". If it doesn't work out for you, I have no doubt you can unload it on ebay.

I mean, look at the competition. What else can you get in this price range... a CAVision? Don't be ridiculous! I bought a CAVision for my HVX, the CAVision was cheap junk and I dumped it. Got the Chrosziel, and it was phenomenally overpriced and mediocre. Dumped that. Got a Vocas and have been content with it, but it's obviously not suitable for use with a Red, so... I'm back in the market. The Redrock looked great on paper, but lots of things look good on paper. I have to say that the preproduction prototype I used exceeded every expectation I had for a $595 to $895 mattebox. It's swingaway. It supports 6x6. It has two rotating stages. It has a 19mm mounting system. It's big enough to work with the Red 18-85 (not quite big enough for the Cooke 20-100 or 18-100 though). All that added up, and it's 10x better than the CAVision at the same price? How do you lose?

As Brian said, if you need the Arri, buy it... nothing wrong with that. I wouldn't recommend the Redrock for a rental house without knowing how it holds up. The redrock is for indie owners or owner-operators who want the functionality offered by the best, but at an affordable price.

I will be making a large post on all the best red accessory products I saw at NAB when I have more time next week (about 10 that I felt would be great fits for reds).

The red rock matte box was one of the big winners on that list for me. I had written it off early when Brian announced it months ago for around $500. Well boy was I suprised when I saw and played with it. Functionally it works very well and there are more features then I could have imagined. I WILL definately be getting myself one. There is no matte box at even 5 times the price that can even come close to touching it.

Is it an ARRI? No! But overall it is very very good and at a price that I would not have even thought would be possible to sell for. The thing that impressed me the most was Brians open attitude to being willing to to learn and consistantly improve the matte box. There are already a few issues with it that I went through with Brian and are being improved on. Brian explained to me that Red Rock is here to stay and that they are looking to gain a market share with strong products at a good price that will constantly be improved upon. From what I saw I believe Brian will not sit back until his products reach the ARRI/Vocus quality level at a fraction of the price. Considering this MB was Red Rocks first kick at the can I was nothing short of speechless at what they created.

Treated properly this matte box should easily last 3 or more years of heavy use. The key to having your gear last a long time is knowing exactly how to properly use all the features of it. If you do not know what you are doing cine accessories can be very easily broken and is probably the reason that Jason Ing noticed some of the problems he mentioned with the demo models. Durring the time I was at the Red Rock booth I noticed many people prying, pulling and tugging on the demo matte boxes in ways that an experienced AC never would. As for the paint falling off Brian mentioned to me that the paint would be anodized on shipping models. I am confident that Brian and his team will overcome the small issues I noticed with it before shipping. I also took the MB over to the action cam rig booth and the Red Rock MB balances and works well with it.

I am simply very excited to become a Red Rock owner. After talking and experiencing Brians commitment to his products constant improvement I can see myself becoming a long time customer.

Choosing this matte box should be one of the easier decisions owners will have to make and people that booked early made a very good choice.

My biggest request is Brian Please make a 15mm offset rod version. I and many others use the 15mm offset for our cameras and I want to get one of these red rock MB's into camera package as soon as possible.

Exactly. Manhandled by everybody. Just like every other demo mattebox at NAB, right? Sort of like the real world. It gets abused. But Redrock's was the only one I found broken.

Does pre-production model mean that their next model will be made with better materials and designed differently? Let me know and I'll be sure to check the new RedRock mattebox again.

I don't doubt that all your other stuff from RR exceeded expectations, but the other stuff is not the mattebox. I don't think a low price point should be a reason to lower expectations. The Red camera has a lower price point, but they didn't skimp on quality... just the opposite.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not bashing RedRock for the sake of it. I would have loved to report how great they are and buy one. I'm in the market for a low priced, high quality mattebox like everyone else. But I'm giving my measly 2cents opinion to help out other Red users like they help me out with their opinions.

It may be under 1k, but that is $$$ I could put toward a better mattebox. But for the "price point", not bad. :)

Those are good points, Finner. If this is the first attempt at it, then I'd like to see what happens with the RedRock. And, yes, I will be taking care of my own stuff (I'm not one of those rental guys). So Red Rock would probably work... but I'm now suspect because of what I saw. An overturned or stripped knob is not that uncommon mistake.
