thank GODDDDD I got mine done...
before mine was upgrades calls were going something like this..

producer "you have a red?"
me - "yes"
producer "is it mx'd"
me "not yet"
producer "oh... sorry, were looking for an mx"

its a must have upgrade if you want to keep getting rentals.

Hate to burst the bubble, but I've had the opposite happen. A producer called wanting to know if my camera was available. I said yes, then he asked, "It's not been upgraded yet, has it?" He was renting another camera and had run into an issue the week before when they had an R1 and an MX on the same shoot. It can work both ways.

It was really rough for me before I got the MX upgrade. I'm a little concerned about this happening again with Epic - perhaps the first 100 RED owners have been rewarded enough at this point and it's time to either shuffle the release order or release everything camera at the same time.

sounds like a one time deal to me.. one producer.. one issue...

for the most part 90% of my calls are requiring MX

LA area.. maybe its different elsewhere

I am thinking not to MX my R1 at all. I am pleased with it as it is. Also I am saving money for Scarlet. Anyone there with similar attitude?

No MX for me either. I'm going to Stage 3 and don't rent out the R1 so no need for it.

Once I get the Epic I'll be getting out and working with it, so I'll need to stay on top of the technology and make sure my gear is current.

I MX'ed my camera back in February and it has been going out more now since then than it has in the last two years. MX'ing my RED has been one of the best buys I have made in a while. So far it has paid for its self and my deposit on Epic along with some other stuff. Of course I also found out that some people seem to like my camera more than others because it works all the time. I guess there are some really thrashed RED Ones out there that have been MX'ed.

Are people concerned about rentals swopping their RED for an EPIC and then faced with a largely unproven camera...are producers gonna leap for the EPIC staight off or keep hiring the RED1 until they have heard good things about EPIC?

Does this mean non MX'd 1's will be going down in price?

Not too sure about that. I can upgrade my camera to MX anytime I want now and for the moment, I'm holding off from doing so. That doesn't mean the camera is worth less, because if I decide to sell it, and I might, the new owner could send it in immediately and have an MX'd R1. So not sure how that's going to make a non-MX camera drop in price.

Depends on the market... Around here, most people inquiring about rentals don't have a clue what "MX" is and whether or not they would want it.

I've been asked for MX once... it was an LA show. And it was so low budget a 3 week rental wouldn't have paid for the upgrade. When I say RED I often hear "you have a Scarlet!". So RED has certainly hyped that well enough.

Outside of LA and NY I bet the reaction is generally "now what do I get with RED over a 7D for the extra money?"

Hate to say it but the 7D comes up more than MX where I am. But I hang with indie filmmakers (who are broke - like most everywhere)

LA is it's own weird little world.

I've got 3 or 4 shows lined up right now and never heard "MX" once. I tell people my EPIC is coming within a few months and I've only heard "what's that?" back.

Has anyone done a MX vs. RED in daylight? RED's always been noise free in daylight. MX can't have an edge in noise, and if it does I don't care. But I am curious if there's a real dynamic range gain or if that's just in low light. For RED noise in low light Neat Video exists.

In a word, "Yes"

... and my Sony EX3 rents three times as much.

:hurray:

I upgraded my Red back in Feb too. Saw a huge surge of interest March, April, May. It's tapered off a bit now that Red has released a bunch of MX chips into the wild. Los Angeles is a shark pool. I love MX though. We shot a music video in Houston last week with it and there's no way it could have been done on M.

Question for Mr. Darge

Question for Mr. Darge

Rick, historically speaking, how long is the Epic rental 'window of opportunity' before the market stabilizes?

Michael.. with epic.. history will be re-written.. I am not expecting a similar delay like the red ones had... I feel like the epics will come out like the mx sensors did..
slow for a month.. then about a month after they are out, they will fly out the doors..

I think there will be a 3 month window on Epic before the market starts to get saturated. But of course there are also all those people waiting for Scarlet and they won't see one until Epic is taken care of. So the window for Epic might be a little longer. The thing I'm not looking forward to is lowering my prices because of a flood of Scarlets out in the field. I guess we'll just have to see what happens.
