I should be taking delivery within the next month and am REALLY hoping to be able to use my nikon glass by that time. Any gossip on when it might be released? Or any info on a third party solution?

THANKS! :)

I can't find any info about it. Is there a site?

http://optitek.org/nikon-prolock.php (on the website it shows a red one - but they have an almost identical epic/scarlet version)
Some users here say its rock solid - I think I will go for this one as well - It has an iris control as well for G lenses that dont have aperture control.

A cheaper version is the cinemods one - Honestly I like the build as well. Some users here said that it is good but not rock solid - I dont really think its a really big issue unless you are going to use very large zooms. Nikon primes are fairly light weight - so no problem there. If you are going for this one I would mount the matte box on rails as well and not directly attached to the lens to further reduce the chance of some minute misalignment.

Hope this helps Brandon.

I have an Epic ProLock, and recommend it. I was initially hesitant to invest in a dumb mount knowing that the Red smart mount is in development, but I am extremely glad that I did given the uncertainty surrounding the smart mount's ship date. This way, there's no cause for frustration while Red takes whatever time is needed to get the smart mount done right!

Cheers,
Tim

Thanks guys, this is very helpful. All my nikon glass is non-G, so that capability isn't that important to me, and if I can get a non G capable mount at half the price, that's definitely something I'm interested in. Particularly since I plan on buying the smart mount asap.

Any others with experience with the cinemods mount?

THANKS! :)

If all your lenses are non-G, why the desire to get the RED Nikon mount? It's going to be much more expensive than the Canon one too.

The cinemods nikon mount uses a sandard Nikon leaf spring mount so the lens will shift slightly durring focus direction changes.
This is the reason the prolock and Red-lock mounts were designed, they add a PL style locking back to keep the lens completely rigid.

What was Jared's last word on the mount... complications in development, but due sometime this year I believe? I can't wait for a smart mount... but the hassle of a cheap adapter with the Canon mount is kind of wearing on me. I might end up buying the Optitek.

All my Nikon glass is non-G - and I have the Epic-Prolock. It is positive locking and really solid. I've used a lot of 'leaf spring variant' Nikon adapters on other cameras and always felt a degree of play - not so with the pro lock. I am happy to hang a 80-200 or 300 2.8 off the Epic without support. If you buy it you won't be disappointed - and you've also got the ability to use G series if you need to.

Yes, I am in exactly the same position and after a bit of thought (and remembering my experience with the original red nikon mount) I just had to spring for the Optitek. This is the second one I have had to buy so it is a bit painful but I believe it will be worth it. I just couldn't bear the feeling of the lenses shifting in the mounty every time I turned the follow focus.

+1 for ProLock. They had a temporary manufacturing issue that Jacek says is behind them, but I haven't seen any official updates from Red whether they are okay to buy again.

Optitek Nikon Prolock seems to be the best oe out there. Love my Nikon glass on Red. Positive lens mount lock, iris control of all Nikon lenses (except latest tilt-shift), solid, and Red approved.
