Was hoping to make it to Sydney last week for SMPTE but unfortunately work commitments got in the way.

Just wondering if anybody who did attend has any reports to share - especially from last nights RED demo with Ted.

Thanks in advance.

I was at the event, and also presented briefly to the crowd. It was packed - about 200 people.. spent about 3 hours demoing and chatting. Great crowd... lots of fun.

I met David Farland there briefly - he can probably fill in as to what was cool and what was new.

I was also at the screening last night, I also got along to SMPTE mainly to see the RED camera. It's really hard to describe the feeling of finally seeing the camera and footage in person after tracking developments on this forum pretty much daily for the last year. DO believe the hype!

With the production kit, rails and cage on the camera is quite a beast, which is great but I'm also looking forward to trimming it down for handheld use. It's actually really small compared to the GENESIS, perhaps as much as one tenth the size. Much smaller than F900 too.

Crossing the Line was screened at 2K ProRes, though if they had told everyone it was 4K, I wonder if anyone would have complained. The pictures are really beautiful, CLEAN and good latitude. Some spots of dirt on sensor were visible on a few shots. I will be definitely substituting "check the sensor" for "check the gate".

Ted said he was off to New Zealand today to visit Peter Jackson. Apparently the grade done for NAB was rushed and PJ has since had time to do further grading and also do a film out. Word is it's looking much better.

REDCINE looks very straightforward with controls similar to Photoshop or CC software. Being able to load REDCINE look files into camera for monitoring is fantastic. Lucas mentioned that RED look files have more information/controls than generic LUT files. They were not going to be drawn on render times though.

A few other points:
Ted and Jarred had gotten nice night exterior images under street lights outside RED HQ.

Regional service centres in addition to RED HQ (ie. Europe, Asia/Pacific) to be set up progressively. More info to follow.

RED lenses are manufactured in the UK, Ted would not say any more.

REDCINE comes free with camera, MAYBE that infers everyone else pays. Sorry, didn't ask how much.

A big thanks to Ted, Lucas, Mike Seymour and ACS for organising the event, all the speakers did a great job. If anyone has more info please chime in.

Just can't wait until December now.

Thanks for the info ozma. Gutted I couldn't be there to see it in the flesh. Any feelings on what the 'interested but not commited' attendees might have thought?

Like you, I cant wait for December.

I spoke to a few more established DOPs, they all liked what they saw, I don't think anyone could walk away disappointed. The only negative in the their view would be if RED failed in any one area, eg. service, repairs or bottleneck in workflow. Any one glitch that might cause a budget blowout. IMHO RED has exceeded expectation every step of the way, and I don't see any reason for that to change.

I do have to say Ted's seminar on Wednesday afternoon made the Thursday morning Acquisition seminar (with several Sony reps and an imaging tech from Thomson Grass Valley) a very interesting Q&A experience :D

I am so glad I made the trip, I learnt a huge amount in three days and had the pleasure of meeting not only Ted but Lucas and Mike as well - I'm just pissed I had to fly back down here for a shoot starting Friday, so I missed out on the ACS night fun.

One of the early questions - I forget the exact nature of it but the asker was wanting the panel as a whole to comment on wide dynamic range cameras in general, offering RED ONE as an example - the Thomson Grass Valley engineer was quick to point out that Bayer sensors involve interpolation of colour, etc etc, all rather old arguments. Another attendee asked how Sony expected to sell any F23s at all given the massive price differential, which was met with icy silence. Very odd.

Given they've put 3 on the ground in Australia already I would imagine Sony Australia are pretty happy. The coming months will tell how good an investment that was for the buyers. Does Australia have the work to support the F23?

Red Ram now 96GB???

Red Ram now 96GB???

I've hardly dared post this, because if it is true, surely somebody else would have mentioned it by now. But I'm sure I saw Ted (Weds morning at the Apple stand) putting up slides of RED-RAM with the figures saying it holds 96GB. The Red store and all FAQs and everything else still suggest that RED-RAM will be 64GB. But I wrote this down, in my notebook and circled it. Did I dream this, or has RED-RAM grown? (I also wrote down the words "One hour recording on Red Ram" because that's what I saw on screen.) If this is true, and the price stays the same, this is suddenly as much more attractive option.

Hey Lucas,

It was good to meet you on the Friday night presentation as AFTRS. My friend and I were the dorks who asked you the question about eSata protocols etc in the waiting room afterwards (yeah, of all the questions we could have asked :)

Just wanted to thank you for the time you put in, you did a great job.

Cheers,
Seth.

The price blow out is going to happen when this stuff gets to post. I run the only all data facility tied to a rental house in hollywood. I know what its like to have to take an uncompressed dpx sequence insert 3:2 pulldown and layoff to digibeta for editorial in new york. Its not easy and the Redcine render farm isn't going to be either. It doesn't matter that your camera is bad ass you will get an editorial whats expected sheet that says do it this way. I promise you won't be laughing at sony when you realize that you need to set the wavlet debayer setting to high quality to avoid moire and realize you render time just quintupled, the night before its due.

Ok - so that's how it is NOW and I 100% agree that the delivery side of things can be a total pain-in-the-arse as I deal with those issues on a daily basis. However, over the years I have seen the industry move away from tape towards datacentric workflow to the point where in the next few years we will see an industy that commonly accepts data as a delivery medium. Of that I am positive.

When you are able to more or less buy a camera and total edit/workflow solution for less than the cost of one Digibeta VTR or HDCAM deck why the hell would you really want to bother with tape. The costs of dataworkflow are dropping steadily - wish I could say the same for the Sony Pro Gear.

Data will only get cheaper and faster. Tape is what it is - something that has served us well up until now but soon to be replaced by a far superior way of working.

Thats my 2 cents.

True, but if you're laying off to Digi then you'd just use the 1K High rather than full 4K, so render time shouldn't be THAT high...

Research, production testing and contingency (time and money) will hopefully minimise most unwelcome surprises. No doubt there will be some heartache as people get used to the new workflow, as was witnessed with P2.
