  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any Hdrx footage from Scarlet??

i am a little disappointed with hdrx to be honest....i have a BT scarlet, so first of all, your options are very limited interms of framerate and such...but we knew that....the biggest problem is that the controls in redcinex are very limited...it's a slider that let's you blend the exposures....there are 2 different "ways" to blend but no masking and there does not seem to be any kind of "smart" software behind the blend.....i guess resolve does a much better job but it is much more involved....i was expecting something like a shadows/highlight slider set in LR or aperture...not here....
i thought i would use it....i don't...

Here ya go, it's still uploading to my dropbox so it may be a few minutes before you can download it. Here's the link. I think paul is right, the ability to grade these filles seems limited in REDCINE-X. Which just means that it's probably a great time to start learning DaVinci if you haven't already. You can use the pen tool, apply a mask to the sky, feather it, make adjustments, create an outside node and make adjustments opposite of the sky. Much more flexable than REDCINE-X and best of all it's free, so why not learn how to use it? For anyone who thinks that a 7D can compete with RAW files, wait till you start trying some complex grades, and see how much you like your compressed H.264 files compared to RAW. The flexability is awesome.

Edit: Upload done, I'll keep it up for a while for anyone else who would like to play with some 3K HDRx footage. Canon 10-22mm, shot on Miami Beach in case you were wondering.

Comparison Grade

Comparison Grade

Here are two comparison with the above file that I graded. It was much easier, and just so much more versatility with Davinci.

Graded in REDCINE-X (this is what I could squeeze out after much fiddling)

Graded in Davinci with much easier control

So what are your frame rate options for HDRX on the Scarlet? I saw some post some footage on youtube and I believe it was HDRX 3k resolution at 24fps. Is this possible? Sorry for so many questions man I'm a newbie to all this HDRX stuff
.

Yes it's free, but it's limited to 1080P which is good enough for 90% of the work out there. You can download it here. You can still get some very good results out of REDCINE-X but with this particular shot and HDRx it was better to go with Davinci. I apolizige about the long upload, for some reason my dropbox has been taking longer than usual, and it's still uploading. I might have to try again.

Yes you can shoot 24fps HDRx at 3K with the Scarlet which is the file I'm trying to send you. It's really taking 48 fps, and I believe it adjusts the shutter speed of the second shot of each 2 frames for HDRx then it blends them together.

Thanks, don't stay up too long, if you want PM me your email address and I'll send you a note when it's done, I have a feeling it's going to take a long time.
