  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any favorite 3 axis motion control sliders?

It seems like a lot of companies are coming out with these. It's hard to gauge if any stick out. Im specifically into timelapses and smaller payloads like 10lbs and under but I'd love to see any that people are into.

I've really been enjoying the Dana Dolly and eMotimo Spectrum ST4 combination the past few months ever since the Group Buy.
Phil's thread from before he launched the group buy has some good information on it aswell along with some different timelapse footage: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?165545-Motion-Control-for-Dana-Dolly-eMotimo-ST4
And eMotimo's website has a nice gallery of different footage: https://emotimo.com/pages/gallery

I haven't used it will a smaller slider based setup myself, but I know a lot of people (specifically for timelapse) do use it with different sliders and get some great results.

As for the Spectrum itself though, I'm a big fan of how it's a really streamlined piece of equipment with minimal wires and setup required.
The Fz unit for it works really well for controlling focus.
The PS4 Remote and On-Device Screen works together really intuitively.
Programming moves is really easy. You can do up to 9 keyframes by itself, or use Dragonframe for more complex moves (haven't checked out the Dragonframe integration myself yet, but I'm planning on using it for my next project).
And most importantly the moves are accurate and repeatable, which can be good for VFX.
Live Control modes work great.

As for a couple cons:
There are occasions while shooting via Live Control I wish I could change rack focus a little faster.
There isn't an app like some of the other slider options (such as Eldekrone), but the menu system is intuitive enough.
There isn't exactly a counterbalance for using it with the Dana Dolly, so you can't do moves on an incline, which is a bit of a con for long 10+ foot timelapses.
But they do sell a motor pod for use with Kessler slider systems, and have integration kits for some of the other sliders as well, so there are ways to do inclined moves.

Like I said though, I haven't tried it out with a slider yet, so I can't really recommend any with it at this point, but I do think it's one of the better motion control systems out there.
