Any downside to not haveing a Touch LCD?

I have the redmote and can control the camera with it. I am thinking of getting a TV logic monitor for viewing. Any downside to not just going with the RED LCD besides not controlling the camera with it? Who else has done this and can talk about it.

I've noticed that on the HD-SDI when you have menus enabled, you can not see the full menus. When you go to select something like frame rate, you can't tell what you are doing. Now, I haven't used my redmote enough yet (wireless range on it is useless after about 3ft) to know what you can and can not see, but if you are using the side handle, you need to have the LCD or EVF to see what you are actually doing.

I've done the same thing, using a TV Logic instead of the Red Touch. It's great, until you need to be able to update firmware, when monitor feed will no longer run over SDI... no Redmote and I've never tried it on an Epic on a job, so not sure if Redmote can fix this.

Also with the TVLogic, you're either getting slight black bars on the top and bottom or punching in a bit ("overscan" such that you lose the very bottom of the histogram and the headroom above the top menu, not clipping the actual words though). Doesn't bother me but thought you should know, its either a slight letterbox or a slight cut on the bottom of your histogram. The third option involves stretching the image to fit the screen, and I like my humans looking human.

Also menus work just fine, no problems, again until you have to re-flash the firmware.

Going by this, I'm assuming anything that has HDMI in could be used to display footage? Say I use my 27" PC monitor, is that correct?

Only if it takes a 720/1080P but yes.
