Hi guys, this may not be the best place to post this but here it is anyway, I am gonna try to shoot a 3D short 3-5 min, using to canon 5ds, and I would like to get some advice in how to approach it, things I would like to know for example are, optimum distance between both lenses, do they need to be in parallel or with a bit of an angle, this angle varies depending of the distance to subject. thanks in advance and if you could point me out to any source of information on the subject I will much appreciated.

Is the Live action or an animation? If it's an animation, you can use a slide plate to create the interocular distance one frame at a time. (I think this was the method used on Coraline)

Either way, you need to do some tests- there are lots of equations out there for working out the sweet spot for the interocular distance, and convergence angle (google stereoscopic calculator) but you may find that the 'rule of thumb' calculation works fine for you- set the interocular distance at 1/30 of the distance of your subject- eg subject 6 feet away, your i/o can be set at 2 inches.

There is so much more to shooting good 3d than this, but experience, practice and messing it up a lot, will help you on your way!

This book is good for starters:

3D moviemaking by Bernard Mendiburu

Good luck!

Thanks guys, I love this place, I do not post a lot but always keep my eyes open in here, and if one day I have the opportunity of owning anything Red I will jump straight away.

I will give a little explanation. I am a cinema projectionist by trade and at the same time trying to get into postproduction here in London. I choose 5ds because is the only thing I can affort. They are installing 3D Xpan (Dolby's 3D system) in the cinema I work and I have decided to replicate an existing live action in house tag in 3D as a technical exercise. Things that I found so far:
3D is at 24 fps, may be an issue, but I am using Baselight to do all the 3D, and I guess I can convert 30 fps to 24 fps.
5ds use H264 compresion... would be this and issue?

Thanks James and Vinit, I will try to keep up dating this as I gather more information for people that may go done the same route.
