  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anton Bauer battery Issue

Leo and Arrinick,
While I have not read anywhere any explicit warning from Red, I believe that Brent and others from Red have posted exactly what Nick said; that if you have trouble, and it is power-related, and you are not a Red battery user, the trouble is not covered under the warranty. I don't have time to do a search right now... but will post back if I can find any examples.
Having said that, I would never own another type of battery. I have found Anton Bauer to be the most reliable, safest, and highest quality cinema and video battery product that I have ever used.
Nick, I do agree that it's disappointing that they will not "recell" a dead battery, considering that the case, the gold mount, and the display are all theoretically still good. I'm sure it's a business consideration. And there are third party "recellers"; I've never used them though.
I have had my Hytrons on occasion have charging issues. But cleaning the contacts (one of which is a temperature indicator in some models; not sure if that applies to Hytrons) and resetting the microswitch always seems to fix it. I use the T2 chargers; not the fancy ones. So I can't do diagnostics.
Leo, I agree about the John Hancock rule.
Cheers,
Harry

Thanks, Harry,

I've always thought it was crazy to buy Red batteries when one already has plenty of Anton Bauer on hand, especially considering the problems flying with the lithium cells.

Looking forward to seeing you in May; I'll be buying the pints!

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Hi!

I know for a fact that RED will NOT honor the warranty if one uses batteries other than RED bricks.

I repeat - if you are using Anton Bauer batteries and you have a power-related problem, RED will not cover its warranty.

I personally think it's a shame. Anton Bauer sells the best batteries, period. The fact that you risk voiding your warranty if you use AB batteries is strange, to say the least.

I think RED needs to rethink this policy. Maybe it's time to start a petition.

There is no doubt that Red has some very different policies compared with other manufacturers. Some don't seem so customer friendly, however, on balance, I am happy with them.

Sure, I'd like to know I could call in with an emergency problem 24/7 and get fast service, I'd like to be fully covered using industry standard power, but Red is already giving me much, much more than I bargained for.

Considering the cost of replacing my Anton Bauer batteries and chargers with those from Red, I'll just be "self-insured" on a power-related problem and pay Red for repairs should they become necessary.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

OK, lets be clear. If you break your camera due to POWER issues, and are not using Rec Batteries, you have to pay for the repair. I have never heard that if your body casting cracks in half, or your chip goes dead, that you are not covered under warranty, of course most of them should be up pretty soon any way.......

Nick

Mine's up as of Jan. 09... no worries here.
Cheers,
Harry

Just wanted to update everyone with my findings.

I finally had a chance to speak with Anton Bauer this morning.

It appears that right off of the charger the Hyton 140's charge to around 17.5 volts. This exceeds what the Red One will accept. Leaving the batteries off of the charger for a wile or drawing down the battery slightly will allow the Hytrons to work on the Red.

Also using the QBH with a 10' cable does in fact work (I'm assuming there is enough voltage loss over the 10' cable to allow this)

Anton Bauer said they were working on the issue.

Thanks everyone for the help and information.

I just checked four Hyton 140's in my shop; right off the charger they show: 17.3, 17.5, 17.6, and 17.8.

I'm having zero power problems with them and typically use them right off the charger, but I will begin removing them a bit early in the future.

I also spoke with Anton Bauer; they are developing a new plate that will limit the voltage.

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

are you guys taking an Anton Bauer plate apart and putting it on a redplate or is a third party making these adaptor plates. I have to travel next week to a client who has a large inventory of Anton Bauers i would love to use his batteries to avoid travel hassles

Anton Bauer makes a mount that replaces the Red V-lock mount on either the cradle or the quickplate.
It is called QR-RED.
Simple operation to swap.
They also make a V-lock adapter plate.
Cheers,
Harry

If you want a quick & simple solution, just get an adaptor to mount an Anton Bauer plate directly onto the RED V-mount. Anton Bauer makes these and we sell & rent them. If you wish to use Anton Bauer batteries on a more permanent basis, get a replacement Anton Bauer mount which attaches to the RED mounting plate in place of the RED V-mount. Anton Bauer also makes this and we sell this item.
