  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Anton/Bauer battery deal for RED users

The Dionic 90 is the same size and weight as the Hytron 50. At 90w, the Dionic will power a RED for about 1.25 hours.

The simple rules on flying with Lithium Ion batteries:
Nothing in cargo; only in carry-on.
Under 8g of lithium (under 100w like a Dionic 90), as many as the size & weight limits of airline carry-on rules allow.
Over 8g (such as a RED 140w), a maximum of 25g of lithium content -- in this case no more than two RED 140w batteries.
For Hytron batteries (NiMH), no restrictions.

You may be able to find cheaper options, but you will usually get what you pay for. I've seen batteries that were supposedly identical to A/B that didn't last for half the lifespan. Major manufacturers as well.

There are other brands that use both V-lock and A/B mount, but all of the batteries are "smart" batteries that talk to their chargers to regulate the cells. This means that no one's chargers will work with anyone else's batteries. I can name half a dozen other battery manufacturers of varying quality and I know that none of them will allow one to interchange batteries and chargers between manufacturers. I have not tested it but I'm guessing this is true for the RED batteries and chargers as well.

Battery status

RED and Anton Bauer (and for that matter IDX) battery communication protocols are not currently compatible with each other, so please don't anticipate such a feature in the immediate future. However the majority of the batteries from these well respected vendors do have "digital fuel gauges" so you can get a quick read.

If you have an inventory of AB or IDX, its good to know that they are compatible with the RED-ONE. On the other hand the particular advantages of RED-BRICK batteries lies in camera integration, light weight, fast charge times and great price / performance.

Just to be sure before I place an order tomorrow, If we completely forego the RED "Power Pack," we can still power the camera with the "AC Power Adaptor," right? http://www.red.com/store/product_detail/78

I'm presuming that this is what the Power Adaptor is for - Plug in to the wall and power the camera. I'm also assuming that it is available to ship with the camera.

It's still unclear, but I believe if you attach the Red bricks to the charger or a battery plate you CAN check two in your luggage.

"Effective January 1, 2008, the Department of Transportation (DOT) through the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) will no longer allow loose lithium batteries in checked baggage."

From TSA here:
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/batteries.shtm

"Even though we recommend carrying your devices with you in carry-on baggage as well, if you must bring one in checked baggage, you may check it with the batteries installed."

this is dissapointing

any chance RED has <100w lithium batteries in the pipeline? the 140's are great, but this regulation--particularly if they do enforce it!!--hurts a bit.

Hytron 100's

Hytron 100's

Hi All,
Would anyone know how long my A/B Hytron 100's will power the RED for? Also can I power the RED from AC via an A/B 2701 charger, is there a power cable available for this yet?

It might be a nice idea if someone from A/B were to post a chart of how long each of their types of batteries will power the RED for, and what plates/cabling are currently available or when they are planned to be available. Might save multiple postings.

Many thanks,

Moggy

This is a awesome deal Mitch! Thanks for making this happen.

For those just starting their battery collection I highly recommend going this AB route. They are the industry standard by a long shot, and you will get every penny worth out of them.

I have been quite impressed with the red brick batteries it is just unfortunate that the red V-mount plate is so problematic.

I'd like to give Mitch and Abel some props too.
I called last week for pricing on just 4 Hytrons to travel with in light of the new LiOn rules. I already have a bunch of chargers, but they still had a terrific price on the Hytrons alone. I told Charlie in sales to load up on some more in anticipation of others doing the same! ;) I also put myself on a list for the A/B "QR-RED" piece for when it becomes available.
Bottom line is that if you are in the NYC or LA areas, Abel is a terrific resource. I've bought all of my HD and broadcast gear from them and the support is top-notch. I assume as they take delivery of Reds in the rental departments that this support will naturally spill in to the Red product line.
Cheers,
Harry

The HyTRON 50's weigh 2 lbs and the Dionic 90 weighs 1.7 lbs.

Also, Anton/Bauer is currently working with RED to put the battery communications in the camera. Obviously, RED has more important things to do right now, so I assume it would be a software update in the near future...

Have you guys seen this product from A/B? The "Hot Swap" mount.
http://www.antonbauer.com/hotswap.htm

"QR-HOTSWAP mounts directly to the camera for true perpetual, continuous battery operation."

I liked the words "perpetual" and "continous". They seem to be the solution around the Red One boot up/start up time.

Cheers

Cool, I'm liking that hotswap deal. And it comes in a few flavors, including the Gold Mount and V-Mount.

Red batteries are 140w Li-Ion. That means that you cannot put them in luggage and can only carry on a maximum of two batteries per person.

Anton/Bauer Dionic 90 batteries are less than 8 grams of lithium content, so you can carry on as many as you want. Anton/Bauer Hytrons and the new Cine blocks batteries are all Nimh chemistry, which have no restrictions for placing in luggage or carry on.

Who was that guy who suggested making offical looking specification stickers to put on your batteries that says that they contain less then whatever the limit is for lithium content?

This is no good news at all, I like the RED bricks a lot, they look great and they are very light.

This means that now I have to look in to the A/B and not only choose the type to use but also understand and find which mounts will be best for the various RED set ups.

I was already looking in to the A/B with BJ wile putting together my Oconnor/Filter order, but mostly because I'm purchasing a huge amount of LED-z lights, so I also need several batteries to power this suckers in car shoots as well for shots were additional generators can't be used and local electricity isn't available.

Now having to look for batteries to use on my REDs is something that I wasn't especting at all.

Well look like I have one more thing to learn about.

That would be me, at least if you're refering to my CML posts on the matter about Abel Cine Tech's policy. We're awaiting delivery from the printer to stick them on all our batteries.

And no, we're not going to label batteries as anything other than what they are. It is not only illegal but also immoral. Imagine trying to sleep at night knowing that you may have had something to do with a plane crash.

If you want to stick with the V-mount you could follow the IDX path -
http://www.idxtek.com/endura.htm

The batteries have 2 removable internal cells that allow for air transport and cheaper replacement. I saw these at NAB last year and they weigh about the same as RED batteries. The only downside is that they won't communicate with the camera, but then neither will AB batteries.

I'm sorry guys and I'm really sorry RED but I see this as a no-brainer.

I will be going for the package deal with HyTRON, simply because you're allowed to travel with as many as you want. That is a big deal maker for me. Also, don't forget that A/B has had experience on this for years and years, they're known for endurance and the hotswap plate is a must have.

The CINE CCLXXX batteries is brilliant on set. As long as you're not handheld that's the way to go. Simply effective and still mobile (in a way).

I will be going for these two deals, this where the last thing that I needed to complete my RED set.
