At the 23rd Annual American Society of Cinematographers (ASC)
Outstanding Achievement Awards Dod Mantle won the feature film
competition for SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE.

Congratulations Dod.

Also it should be mentioned here that after SM Anthony Dod Mantle shot on RED1
three single dramas based on the Kurt Wallander Mysteries starring and co-producing
Kenneth Branagh and Antichrist by Lars von Trier.

Lars von Trier's Antichrist movie is for sure going to be presented at Cannes 2009.

Maybe a good pointer for the Oscar but for me it's too close to call between Claudio Miranda & ADM if you're a betting man.

I thought Benjamin Button was incredibly polished (beautifully graded too)...they certainly squeezed every ounce out of that camera system! But Slumdog is just a completely different approach...multi-format, kinetic, vibrant...what a year for cinematography (particularly digital cinematography)!! And Deakins has had another blinding year again - "The Reader" (with Chris Menges, of course) and "Revolutionary Road" AND I only just noticed he lit "Doubt" too!! Last year he's double-nominated for "No Country For Old Men" and "The Assassination Of Jesse James" (which a lot of people said should have won)...does this man never rest??!!!

Don't forget that he was also a Visual Consultant for Wall-E as well.

Yikes...when did find time for that...during a lunch break??!! Funnily enough someone was just telling me last night that there's a great DVD extra on the "Wall E" DVD where Deakins gives the animators a great lesson in lighting (something like spends ages intricately lighting a scene then turns off all the lights except for one which looks just as great!)

David he was a lighting consultant for the film, they brought him in for his style of lighting in live action, and to help bring some of that to the animation.

Deakins was unlucky again.

Maybe he would get next time.

Dod is important for us because he also uses digital cameras like a R1.

Deakins probably waiting for Arri D2x to jump in a digital acquisition.

But who knows?
