Black matte paint is your friend. Any professional lens tech has the right stuff. It takes a couple of minutes and reduces these internal reflections. As Phil stated a Matte box is also your friend. or at least a French flag.

If Black matte paint on the lens mount is the fix for this, then I'd say it should have had that applied by Red to begin with, no?
I'll ask Red what they think, maybe they have a spare can of black spray I can use.

What mount were you using with your Xenons?

Has any one tested the different between the Nikon Aluminium and the Nikon Titanium mounts?

Sorry correction, looking over my notes, it only happens in 5k, 5kHD and does not happen in 4k, 4kHD and any other wide configuration like 5kwide.

I suspect why it happens is that the rear element on the xenon lenses are not as far back as most general PL mount lenses so the combination of PL+5k+Full Frame Lens Coverage creates the shadow. That's why it doesn't happen with any other lens, even FF SLR lenses.

I have seen a lot of these type flares on all types of cameras. When shooting stills you tend to adjust your position a little till the flare goes away. And as people have pointed out you are not using an adaptor which may be making the need to protect your lens all the more critical. But it is not the case that you won't get flares. When light hits the glass it starts to bend. Which is why sometimes with kino flo you get weird flares though the light is clearly out of the frame. All the light has to do is catch part of the front element and then it bounces around inside the lens (typically lens expensive lenses) until it is delivered to the sensor. Sadly (or not depending on your POV I guess) this is why 40K+ lenses like Angenieux and Fujinon cost so much as there is a lot of technology and design built into those lens to help mitigate this. For run and gun work I frequently use the Cabrio lens and have noticed a distinct reduction in a lot of issues from say using Canon L series for example. I do agree though that if the mount has a known issue, esp for the price of those little units, it would be reasonable manufacturing improvement to put a flare reducing coating if they are indeed the issue.

Have seen the top gate shadow on my Dragon and my Ultraprimes in 6KHD so it's not just a Nikon mount issue.

From what I've seen it's not as simple as lowering the flag on the mattebox. If you want a nice looking flare from the top (where the sun tends to be) the gate shadow hits pretty good and hard. Flagging it off seems to kill the flare that you wanted. Saw it right away when i first unpacked the Dragon, and I don't remember ever seeing it with the MX after the OLPF protector was installed. It is in a place that might just be fixed by shooting 5K....not that it is a great solution.

I'm not here to tell anyone what to do. RED makes the mounts and the cameras, etc,. I just make the pictures. If I share something that might work for people. If you want to take that as an opportunity to shit on Red that is your business.

I just make the pictures and I do what I have to do to do that.

We use flocking paper to fix this sort of thing on the mount or rear lens bushing. A matte box should cure it though. it does seem more common on Nikon glass but also on some PL mount lens conversions.

So saw this shadow in the flares while I was building up the camera and rolled a shot. This is PL mount, bare 32mm Ultraprime, 6K HD. I was able to flag it off with my hand but in 6K it looks like you would have to decide either to lose the flare from the top corner (this was setting sun so still pretty low in the sky, or live with that cut.

I don't remember the MX having this problem so shooting 5K may be a work around as well. When I get more time I'll get some more methodical testing in.

Yes I have been getting the same shadow in the flares. Like the flare starts from a little bit inside the frame.

also - an update, RED has confirmed that they are aware of a problem with the Nikon mount and I am awaiting a solution.

I have had this problem too (with the second image). It is annoying, and sometimes unavoidable.

Has happened on my canon mount...
