  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Another hint...

I don't think Red One is anywhere near it's retirement age. Even without the upgrade to M-X sensor, it is a very capable camera producing stunning images.

Dear Jim,

Does this new plan apply also for FF35 Epic? Keep the Red One and buy Epic 6K instead of Epic-X? Of course, with the schedule delay in mind...

Thanks!
George

I have made this suggestion here before, but I'm not sure if it caught Mr. Jannard's attention: It would be a wonderful contribution to our industry and its future if Red would consider donating the turned-in Red One's to accredited film schools.

The goodwill and publicity would be amazing and you would be starting the next generation out with the best gear.

Whaddya think?

Or better yet, use the old REDs to start a film school program of their own out at the RED Ranch...re-model the film school experience in the same way that they have shifted so many other paradigms.

That would be something...

REDONE have already become an icon. Just to own one and have become a part of the fantastic adventure is a privilege.

Good to know... :-)

Jim

No one seems to have commented on the significance of this comment. I believe Jim is implying you will be able to order and pay for your new camera before the end of December. I would call that bigger news than the hint...

What about donating some Red One trade in's to film schools throughout the world, just a thought, these are the future Red users. With a few restrictions of course (like any academic specific product) In the long run it makes good economic sense to have students trained in the use of your product ! I just wish I had a Red One when making my grad film, I went with the HVX but I really could have done with the extra DR the Red One offers, not to mention the larger sensor and lens options.

Ya, I was wondering why no one picked up on that. Hopefully you'll be able to have your camera by the end of December... what a Christmas present that would be!

I hope someone from the Smithsonian is keeping an eye on things. Be cool for a couple of early Reds to end up in the American History museum.

We have had MANY requests from RED ONE customers to create an option where they can keep their RED ONE and still buy an early EPIC-X.

Many of you have made your money back several times over with your RED ONE, your RED ONE has become part of your family, you want to hold on to part of your personal history... along with industry history. We get it.

We will create another option for you to consider on the 30th.

Jim

cool.

What happened to the other options?
Can't find the threads/link.

Sorry if this has been suggested but there are so many threads maybe we could remove some and amalgamate answers. ie what exactly is been announced on the 30th will the FF35 Monstro timescale be announced or it is just the Myst-X, will we have news about the scarlet and epic.
I am not looking for information or fishing for answers but there are so many posts and threads with similar subjects it is very difficult to keep track of new developments even if you are on the forum 24/7

wow this is some really great news.

wow this is some really great news.

The 30th, I can,t wait.

It is of course very strange that a lot of people will be quick to get rid of their Red Ones. At this point there is absolutely no discernable difference between film and Red in the eyes of viewers/ consumers. Just look at the number of music videos and commercials on TV. No broadcaster, producer, distributer, exhibitor, consumer or couch potato has ever complained there is really no real way to tell. Not even majority of complainers on reduser.net can tell the difference on a screen. As a matter of fact in critics circles “District 9” is going head to head with “500 Days of Summer” as the best Indie Flick of the summer”, Go figure. The issue of dynamic range is strange and mostly in the eyes of most “Forum Heads”. Do you really think if Panasonic , JVC, Sony or all the other competitors give an F**K about your opinion on the dynamic range of their cameras? They tell you in their brochures the graphs and charts show the entire DR you need, just press the DRS button, if you don’t get the Range, they will tell you on their forums you suck at filmmaking.

I'd disagree. I remember talking to my cousin and aunt who had just seen Public Enemies (who know nothing about film) and they said something along the lines of it looking "cheap" and "homemade" but they couldn't tell me why. And they had no idea obviously what it was shot on.

Consumers have seen so many things shot on film that even without knowing how noise and dynamic range works, it is ingrained into their head how film looks opposed to video.

Public Enemies was not shot on RED. What are you talking about? Oh, I get it. All digital is the same. Right?

Ask them what District 9 was shot on...

Jim

Haha, whoa you swooped down fast.

I have no idea myself what Public Enemies was shot on, I have not seen it. But I know from just the trailer it was definitely not film. I was speaking of digital vs. film and not specifically red vs. film.

Sorry if it sounded like I think all digital is the same. Red is closer to the film range than most digital cameras, but when you look at everything as a whole, film is still sitting at the top below everything else.
