Along the same line as 1 frame Digital slate.....

the ability to shoot a slate (Head ID) before you roll, then when you roll, the Head ID and the shot are married together into one quicktime file. On film this is no problem as it is a linear medium, but with RED, when you head ID, then roll, it renders 2 files, which can be seperated, Never to be referenced ever again together.

Big issue.

A record pause would also work, that pauses recording, then continues on onto the same r3d file, therefore quicktimes are 'joined' as well. Don't know if this is possible processor-wise, but it'd have the same effect.

A record pause sounds like a potential sabotage during a shot.

This is not so much a big Issue, All files have Reel names and Clip #'s. Its very easy to not only make sure the Slate exists in the Take, but also search for an advanced Take by Timecode, or Filename.

Actually Major Sabotage, and ruins the entire purpose of a Jam-sync Slate, Its always better to shoot the slate in the Take, whether its a Head or Tail slate. Its Tradition,

Come to think of it, you guys might be right. I was imagining a record-pause that would have to be a combo of user keys or something, kind of like an und-exit type of thing. But if you just shoot the slate in the shot, it wouldn't really matter.

Sorry but what is a slate? I treid to translate this word on several sites into german, my mother tongue, but didn't find something that would make sence.

A simple way to implement slates in this manner would be if there was an option to have the camera consider shots of less than X seconds (4 maybe?) to be the slate and add them onto the beginning of the next take.

Quick, easy, and doesn't require anything other then the run/stop button we already have.

A Slating function is necessary.

My post was all about tradition. Sometimes it is not possible to shoot a slate during the shot- i.e. table top , macro photography, stunts, explosions, Off speed shots (why shoot the slate at 120FPS?), crane shots, tale-slate shots, late roll B camera shots, or tale-slating a previously mislabled slate. etc, etc.

Tradition is "bumping" a slate seconds, minutes or hours before the shot, so as not to disturb the moment of rolling - on both MOS and some sync sound shots.

This would be a good professional feature.

Also, just because it would be "easy" to go back and arrange slates and shots by time code or shot label, you should'nt need to - xtra step=xtra time.

My 2cents

I'd like to be able to add shot metadata in camera - scene/take+options (MOS etc.) per shot, along with Director/DP/Project info set in the System->Project menu. A camera-generated Head ID (5 frames or so) would be great.

Back in the Viper days, Collateral used the S.Two system to do something similar on each shot.

I'm hoping this is the kind of thing a future version of the SDK could enable someone to create.
